2015 Tacoma Engine Failure

Just looked at the pic again - price isn't on there.....quoted me $9500 for used engine.

 

Woah.....good catch. I didn't even notice the year was wrong.

 

My '15 needed a new short block at 10K miles, bad rod bearing. I bought a '15 Tacoma because of the reputation for reliability, and to avoid any potential issues with the '16 trucks. Oh well, it was covered under warranty. I had/have intentions of keeping it long term, I'll see how it goes. Seems fine for now, anyway.

 

Probably just dumb luck.

 

9500 for an engine is rediculous. If they don't want to fix it, get one from a junkyard for a few hundred bucks and drop that puppy in.

 

A slight error in machining, a rogue metal shaving......sometimes stuff happens when it's being mass produced. In my case I'm sure the new short block is fine, I just hope they cleaned the shit out of any oil passages in the heads when they put them on the new engine.

Anyone have any advice for dealing with Toyota Headquarters? I've kept things pretty civil up to this point, but have been very strong and persistent with them.

Anyone else know what getting "goodwill" means? Assuming it's comps on repair costs?

A "Goodwill" repair is when they cover something outside of the warranty period. It just means they don't HAVE to, but they will out of the goodness of their heart.

 

How often do you do regular service, oil changes, diff fluid changes,etc. You say about the compliment of how good of shape the truck is in, but the notes in the work order say excessive rust. I also live in a heavily salted state, like they are trying to cure meat on the road, and my rust is very minimal. 2013 with 62k miles.

 

Compliment about truck condition was 2k miles before this issue started, at the previous service, from a service manager.

In terms of changing oil, fluids, etc - the vehicle was strictly maintained per the requirements and recommendations of Toyota.

Sooner or later, all mechanical things break. You play the odds and hope for better than average, but sometimes you get worse. Is it normal? No. Does it happen? Yes. Hopefully Toyota will pony up something, but is it really their fault or anyones? I just put a new head on my 2015 Volvo at my expense because it was outside the warranty. Would have been nice if Volvo had at least picked up the cost of parts, but sometimes the cost of ownership can be high. It's a gamble we all take. Hopefully things work out for you, but sometimes stuff happens and it's just the way it is.

Prior to my Volvo, I had bought 12 new cars. I never had an extended warranty and never needed it. I got burned on the Volvo. In the long run I'm still ahead by not getting the extended warranties, but the vehicles I've bought since the Volvo have had it. I don't feel like having to cough up that much all at once again. Vehicles outside of the warranty are a liability that you have to be prepared for.

 

Was thinking that too...something doesn't sound right here.

@Torspd doesn't the 12+ 1gr-fe have smaller/different main bearings and a shortened piston skirt?

Engine was the 6 cylinder.

Great point- absolutely a gamble with vehicles, especially one that are outside the warranty. I realize that any part can break at any time, but I do hope toyota steps up.

I was shocked at the 17k too. Dealer said (that right there is a big reason why the price is so high) the only way toyota would approve a rebuild, regardless of who pays for it, was with ALL new toyota parts.

I'm ok under the hood - learning from my father in-law - and I wish I could influence the way this turns out a bit more. But this happened 2000 miles away from home, on a vacation. I'm working with limited resources, and an anxious family who wants to get home.

 

Not certain on skirt height. You are correct on the main bearings, as they are not as wide as they used to be between the '05-'08 engines. They don't reach the full width of the main caps. Where they used to before. Less friction, but also less load bearing.
