Are spacer lifts crap?

I have researched and searched the web and all over Taco World, just trying to figure out what's the best way to do 3" or 4" lift? Seen several posters say biggest POS and waste of money ever, and not the right way to do it. But seems to be really popular way of getting it done. My local dealer will install a 3" to 2" Readylift for $1175+ tax. I don't do any serious off -reading, just want a little extra ride height. And no, I did not put those stickers on the bed myself. This is a TSS Edition and it came just as you see it (with 17" wheels and BFG's instead of 16" like most others) except for the bushwhackers. Hoping to get some advice from the experts.

That price is too much. For that price you can do it right with bilstein 5100s and an add-a-leaf in the rear, including install from an actual shop, and have beer money for the month left over.

 

Save up some money, do a lift correctly. Spacer lift will ride ruff and break your shocks. I did this for about a grand.

I wouldn't put a spacer lift on a yugo! Let alone my 35k truck. Lol

 

Look at it like tires, sure you could buy the KOBODO no name bargain bin tires that ride like shit, etc. or you could buy the BFG, Goodyear brand tires you know are quality and won't explode on the highway 10,000 miles later. You just spent $35k on a truck, don't cheap out on such an important component.

If you are going to lift it do it right. No point in lift if you aren't going off road. 1200 bucks is not worth looking cooler at the mall.

 

Good example. I once bought some Nankang tires and almost didn't live to tell about it. Blowout within the first oil change.

Spacer lifts are like Body lifts--not worth it

 

This its almost cooler not to lift now since everyone seems to lift their truck from mall rats to soccer moms. Nothing wrong with lifting it as its your truck, but consider the benefits over the cost, especially if your not using the lift for its purpose. Trust me I've had spacers, I've had coilovers and lifted a few of these trucks, I now realize its not worth it in the long run if you can resist the bug.

 

The dealership is trying to charge you $1175 for a $250 kit and ~2-3 hours of labor. Find someone local who can help, buy real suspension and provide beer and pizza for an afternoon of assistance. You will learn a lot about your truck, get better suspension and probably still save money.

Depends on what your doing with your truck, my truck is never going offroad really other than maybe a little bit of sand backroads. Im gonna do spacer lift for a couple months and then take it up high. Throw a body lift on it to. Not everyone's cup of tea, but its mine, and its my truck.
