The mountain area in Colombia where we live is VERY rural, and the roads are unpaved dirt and extremely rough. Trail driving is an everyday experience for us. I only drive my Hilux when I absolutely need to because the roads beat it up so bad. I use my moto for everyday travel because:
1.) I can easily avoid the potholes and deep ruts in the road, and

2.) It’s easier on gas and a hell of a lot more fun !

My wife and I operate a resort called Termales in the mountains 75km north of Medellin. It is one of two thermal hot springs in the northern part of Colombia. The place was a total dump when my wife took over its management. We have completely renovated it, and now, in spite of its very rural location, it is an extremely popular tourist attraction.

Our business has grown to the point where we have to travel 150 km round-trip to Medellin at least once a week (sometimes twice) to buy groceries and other supplies for the resort. Over our roads, this takes over 3 hours one-way. We use my Hilux to transport the stuff. My Hilux is a 2003 DCSB 4x4 “Hi-Rider” model. It is kinda a bastard as it is the only Mk5 Hilux 4by that came with a 2.4L 2RZ-FE motor. Everywhere else this model had the 2.7L 3RZ-FE. Go figure. It has a 5-spd manual trans and a locking rear diff.

I could have bought a newer D4D diesel Hilux, but I hate the looks of the 2006+ Hilux. Plus everyone I know that has one bitches about all the trouble they have with the engine’s electronic controls. The 2003 model was the last one sold here w/o airbags, ABS, and emission
controls. So I found one in pristine condition and bought it. I paid a premium price, but it was worth every peso.

When we were looking to buy a truck, one of our “had to haves” was dual fuel ... CNG (compressed natural gas) and gasoline. Gasoline here is 8900 pesos/gal about $3.00 USD/gal. CNG is 1200 pesos/gal. (40 cents USD per gallon). Mileage and power are practically the same, so it was a no brainer. The CNG conversion in my Hilux is a French unit, and is the BEST setup available here. The only problem is that the CNG tank takes up a LOT of space in the truck bed. As our business grew, we needed more and more space for our stuff, so I had to remove the back seat in the truck. I am having a trailer custom built to give us the additional room we need to get our supplies from the big city to the resort. I designed it to be light yet strong so it can carry a lot and still be easy to tow.

My plan for the truck is to set it up to better handle our roads to allow easier transport of our supplies. So far I have upgraded the tires to 285/60R16 Tornel AT-05s, and the shocks and steering stabilizer to Koni units. My Hilux is a “Hi Rider” model that sits 2 “ higher than a standard Hilux 4x4, so I am not looking to lift it. I will not be installing aftermarket bumpers, sliders, etc., because they add weight that I really do not need to haul around.

As I add things and make changes to my truck I will detail it in this thread. I hope you guys will find it interesting. Sorry this was so long-winded.

Well... there are plenty of "f'ed up roads" here. Don't know if you could handle the life style here after living in La Jolla, but everyone's welcome. Would love to drive your '81. Really sweet ride. If you did all that great work then you're one hell of a fabricator.

I’ve spent a ton of time in Central America (nica, costa, Panama) and love it! I’m a beach kid at heart and love the jungle... La Jolla was never really my style.

And yes I did all the work myself at my house, the dirty looks I get from neighbors are priceless!!

I know what you mean. We used to live up the coast in Laguna Beach. Whenever I worked on my truck at our place, neighbors would take photos and go to the town council to try and make me stop. Since it was my personal vehicle they couldn't do a thing.
