Today, I changed the oil and filter on my Tacoma for the first time. After I change the oil (on other vehicles), I always turn the key on (engine not running) and watch the oil pressure light (indicator) come on and then start the engine. I watch the light go off.

With the Tacoma, I found no oil pressure light/indicator so I had to break out the manual. It appears that if the oil pressure is low a message will come on the display. This message appears to only come on if the engine is running and there is no oil pressure.

Where as, the charge light comes on even when the engine is not running which I found unusual. Why turn on the charge message with the engine off and NOT turn on the oil pressure message with the engine off? I find it more useful to have the oil pressure message on with the engine off.

I feel like you're way overthinking this.

    none yet/none planned! It's perfect!
Just a little bit! I feel like there are a lot of Engineers that drive Tacoma's or at least people that think a lot like them!

Like you said if you forgot to put in oil before you start it, you think an oil pressure light will tell you to stop? Probably not.

And a leaky o ring or drippy drain plug would not cause the oil pressure light to come on either. It would literally need to be spewing out or draining out to have an effect. So yeah you are really overthinking this.

    I want a real OPG.

But those were removed decades ago because the avg owner were clueless to their meaning or how to read them.

Hence, the advent of the 'idiot light'. Which you actually still have. You just want it back in it's previous form.

The only reason it came on in a non running condition before is that it was part of the 'lamp check'. Just like all the other wizardry that light up now with just the key 'on'.

The reason the 'check charging' shows with the key on is that you are draining the system and no charging to support that is occurring.
