Looks like my N/A build will consist of...
    -URD Headers
    -URD Y Pipe
    -URD MKIII Cat Back
    -URD TCAI
    -URD MAF Calibrator

will post results once this is all ordered and installed!

I know this thread is for the 1gr, but I'm building a 5vz and doing the cost vs. benefit comparison with components. I'd like to stay n/a since it's really a wheeling rig at heart and want to keep the amount of parts that can fail to a minimum. I emailed LCE today and they said to call them since there was too much to write back.

I read that they made a 300 hp n/a 5vz and want to see if any of the parts they used will help me out. It was 12:1 compression which I think would make the engine less reliable and prone to head gasket failure...

Also I was watching a video where the mechanic had these gauges - they seem reasonably priced. Any feedback on them?

Don't want to burst your bubble, but a N/A 300hp 5vzfe would only be good in the sand. Would have no low end torque. Supercharger all the way.

No worries - just reading up and watching videos on tuning. It seems like the trade off to making more power in this case is often moving the max power up in rpm's. If I can account for frictional losses in the drivetrain and end up with 190 rwhp I'll be happy - just enough to get a little oomph on hills and in headwinds on the freeway. I'll call up LCE on Monday - they seem like the kind of company that would be straight up with me. Thanks for the input! Any further info is welcome.

    Here's my engine build page:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/5vz-rebuild-first-timer-noobtastic-thread.492672/

Saw you had a 5vz swap in an old 4runner - any info on mods besides the s/c? The link to the build page is broken

    190rwhp should be do-able and fun for a N/A 5vz.

I've been trying to bug the admin as the yearly lease expired on the site hosting, trying to get it paid.

Yeah, quite a bit of mods, might do a build thread here but i would really like to copy/paste from the other page.

    Lets see:
    TRD S/C
    URD s/c pullies (all sizes)
    URD tensioner pulley
    URD crankshaft pulley
    URD 7th injector
ported and polished lower intake manifold
    ColtCams Stage 2 262 cams
    Arias forged pistons (stock compression)
    balanced bottom end
    3-angle valve job
    MAPECU2
downey headers to 2.5" y-pipe to 3" vibrant spun cat
fully rebuilt engine with OEM gaskets/seals.

Only things i didn't do were water injection (will probably do next year) oversized valves, P+P heads, cometic HG, ARP studs and forged rods (oh and i learned later, the forged 3vzfe crank bolts in... argh)

I broke the engine in then took the truck off the road for restoration work... been working the past 2 months to hopefully have it back on the road this year.

How much did you port the intake? I've been looking up info on porting heads, but again it seems that it could work against me by lowering compression.

I'm thinking most of what I can do is work on airflow. Doug Thorley or TRD headers (gotta be CARB certified for CA), AFE drop in filter, and again maybe some porting and polishing of the intake and heads. Other than that I'm not sure what other mods will help me - I guess that's what I am going to ask LCE on Monday.

I guess changing the compression ratio could be an option - not sure of all of the pros and cons yet though. Would a 3 angle valve job w/ larger or upgraded valves and better springs make a difference?

I've read cams can mess with emissions at idle. Not worth it to me if I would risk not passing smog in CA which tests emissions at idle and at cruising speed.

    Sounds like a beast of a 4runner!

It was ported by the PO - basically he ground the runners to match the gaskets and polished them smooth. nothing crazy. I ported the headers to match the exhaust gaskets as well since they were not the greatest.

I'll eventually get the supercharger ported to match the lower intake. Supposed to add 10% more HP.

Porting heads wont screw with compression ratio, unless you port the chambers. Talk to Gadget @ URD about porting the heads, he has some tips on what he did to gain some good power. I only learned of it after i put my motor together tho. 3-angle valve job done properly should give a flow increase.

Compression ratio may screw with smog. might make it burn cleaner. But you definitely would need a standalone ECU like Haltech or Megasquirt to run it.

the cams are pretty mild. no lope at idle. once i get it smogged i'll post the results but i'm expecting it to pass without issue.

Thanks man. I appreciate your info.

I talked to LCE and they said to leave the compression ratio where it's at (9.5?) since stepping up fuel octane would occur around 10:1 so I'd be paying a lot of money for upgraded cylinder heads for not much improvement.

I asked them if they do porting and polishing on these heads, but he said they usually work on 4 cylinders (22r's I'm guessing is what they work on the most). They'll give me a call back about it. I'll ask URD about it then. Again appreciate the info!

LCE said that upgrading the valve train would make a bigger difference than porting if I had to choose one or the other and this is the kit they have:

    http://www.lceperformance.com/High-Performance-Pro-Valve-Train-Kit-5VZ-p/1021501.htm

We'll see about that - it's a lot of dough. Didn't reach URD in time before they close (darn time difference) so we'll see what they have to say tomorrow!

And some videos of how it sounds!! Very interested in this setup as well, minus the TCAI and calibrator. Interested to see what all of this stuff will do for you

Don't forget though, the calibrator allows these bolt ons to live up to their full potential!

This is almost the same thing I just installed on my 2011 dc lb 4x4. Made custom 2.5 inch Y pipe and 2.5 inch exhaust with Magnaflow 2.5 inlet and two 2.5 outlet. Everything else is the same but I did install 70mm throttle body. Truck will light up 33 inch tires with no problem and runs great. Sorry no dyno numbers yet. Maybe some time next month.

    ***From @Kyitty ----

This is what a reasonably stock Taco 4.0 V6 Auto looks like on a dyno (K&N CAI + Spintech Muffler)

You don't get a very smooth curve on an Automatic though!

Compared to after adding URD Headers. (This graph shows RWHP at the tires)
