I recently replaced the rear drum brake shoes on my Tacoma. I did the driver side first and then I did the passenger side about one month later. I have reinstalled the hardware and shoes precisely as they should be as far as I can tell. When I reverse and jam on the brake it tightens just as it should. However as soon as I drive forward it seems to loosen up and not just a little but it completely backs off... At that point the E brake pedal goes clear to the floor has zero resistance and does not work at all.
So I get in the truck back it up and tightens just as it should. And the cycle begins all over again the moment that I drive forward. I've also noticed that the faster I drive and slam on the brakes in reverse the tighter it gets...... but why doesn't it just stay tight? I've never experienced an intermittent ebrake issue and haven't a clue what this could mean. If anybody has any insight suggestions or fixes for this please let me know it's getting rather annoying and considering my business it's very important that I have an ebrake. I can't always backup to make the ebrake work when I need it too as I'm not always in an area that allows for that kind of maneuvering. It also generates strange looks from my customers as I attempt to reverse for what appears to be no reason just to get my ebrake to work.

Thanks for reading hope you all have a Kick-Butt day!

Sounds like the lock nut on the e-brake cable might be loose :notsure:

Check the cable adjustment first and if that looks good, time to pull the drums and make sure everything is correctly attached.

Okay well I'll pull them off again and take a few photos attempt to adjust the lock nut and see what happens thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know if that was a fix

You need to adjust the rear brakes Properly First. Up on a jack stand with the wheels off.

ADJUST REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE

    (a) Provisionally install the hub nuts. (To hold the brake drum in place)

    (b) Remove the hole plug, and turn the adjuster to expand the shoe until the drum locks.

    (c) Using a screwdriver, release the adjuster 15 notches.

    (d) Install the hole plug.
