And there you are on FindU, 2.2 miles NE of Fairbanks. Maybe you have some RFI at the house that is keeping the squelch open.

Sent a test email via APRS that took about two seconds between hitting send on the radio and my phone receiving it.

I'm guessing that you are littered with RFI around the house. Time to break out the HT and go hunting for offending wall warts.

Probably. Thinking about it, where my truck was parked there was probably only 15 feet between the antenna and my wireless router in the house. Not sure if that's the cause but I'll play around with parking in different areas and see what happens.

For me it's the power supply for my Roku. The thing basically takes over all of 2m. I can't scan the band at all, it stops every 2.5k just to listen to that glorious static. I haven't found a real good solution for dealing with them.

    Have you tried ferrite beads?

Also, contact Roku, I believe to be FCC compliant they can’t let off that kind of interference. I could be wrong.

Looks good. I've been wanting that radio for a while but just can't drop the coin yet. Other truck mods are taking priority

Some ideas to run past you guys....

The 710G is capable of crossband repeating. Mine is connected to my secondary battery so I can run it easily for days before power consumption becomes an issue. What I'm thinking about trying is setting up the 710G to repeat from a UHF frequency to the commonly used local VHF repeater in order to extend the range of a dual band HT (which I haven't bought) when I'm away from the truck. I figured if I used a UHF simplex frequency programmed with a DCS tone it would limit the chance of any other random users from being retransmitted to the repeater accidentally. I can lock the 710G to retransmit the UHF signal one way, from myself to the VHF repeater only. The repeater transmission should make it to the HT without issue and not need to be repeated by my truck.

    Any try this before?

What HTs can transmit on UHF while still monitoring a VHF frequency?

What you described is called Tx boost. It is a very common. Full cross band repeating can be annoying and a lot of repeaters will actually ban that. Transmission Boost was setup to be a viable alternative.

Several HTs will monitor both, I have done it with a FT-60 and TH-D72A.

Yes. I used to do this four years ago. Cross band repeat one way. A side or B side on the Kenwood. It works. on the HT I just had to program it using software, because the freq. split was like 300 Mhz! lol

And the need to ID. If your radio is transmitting, then you need identification:

"The unattended station must be identified on all frequencies it transmits on. Since this is a form of remote base, the user's ID over the UHF uplink to the dualband radio also serves to ID the VHF output of the mobile rig. In the other direction, however, there is no way for the control operator to ID the UHF downlink from the mobile remote base, so some form of automatic ID must be employed [97.119]. Unfortunately, few manufacturers include the capabilities listed above in their rigs. Hence, to be fully legal, some form of add-on controller may be necessary."

My plan was to have the radio only retransmit my transmissions with my callsign. The HT would receive direct from the repeaters.
