I have seen enough other larger, lighter colored insects in the area that I feel this larger fly could pass.

10-4. We get some big mayflies here, but not caddis. 12 is about the largest caddis we would see here.

I double checked which hook I used for the caddis and it is in fact a #10. Sorry to mis-inform everyone :(

Still looks good. Lil more useable size. Looks like a York bend/stimi hook.

I recently purchased an Orvis Encounter Fly tying kit (it's their basic kit). The hooks are pre-labled for each pattern within the kit, so I really don't know what hook it is. I'm not good at hook knowledge, yet!

Dude, you aren't the only one! I've been fishing for 40 years and I still can't tell you the size by looking at the hook!

We should do a fly swap sometime. I haven't pulled the trigger on my vise and tying stuff yet but I will be forced to by the end of the month when the sale is over at J Stockard.

I'm in. Most of my flies are super simple like the stuff I posted above and wooly buggers, Royal Wulffs, and stimis. Typical brookie flies, but this may force me outta my comfort zone a little.

I want a new vice, I need to check out said sale. Stockard seems to have a good selection, but stay away from their brand hooks, Ive had less than stellar luck with em. They seem to be really delicate and break way too easy

I don't think there are any vises on sale this month but Dr Slick tools are marked down and I have a lot of the materials that are on sale in my cart as well.

Hey! Have any of you read this book? It's a interesting read for fly fishing enthusiasts. It profiles and discusses some of the most influential flies developed and how they helped shape the world of fly fishing as we know it today. Materials and variations of tying patterns are also mentioned. Again, neat read for fish nerds.

Hey all quick question, how often should you replace your line? I inherited a fly rod and reel about 20 years ago. This thread has inspired me to go try my hand at fly fishing again on some mountain streams. Should I replace the line and backing before I head out?

Really depends on use. Clean it really well and see how it works. Inspect it for cracks and damage. If it looks good, give it a go.

My reel I use for bass fishing in lakes has the same line on it from 3 years ago. Same goes for the one I use for big trout water. It doesn't get abused as much.

The stuff I used yesterday gets replaced yearly. Small mountain streams destroy line for me. Smashing it off rocks and trees and stomping on it really takes it toll.

Some people get years out of their stuff, some don't.
