Got quoted 1300 to replace all 3 U-Joints and Carrier bearing at Pep Boys. Other shop quoted me $400... What has everyone else paid? Been hearing a squeal when in reverse for the past month...

Take it to a real shop.

    $1,300 is absurd

I sheared a ujoint and warped my driveshaft awhile ago. They welded a new yolk, fixed my driveshaft, balanced it, and new u joint. $300 cash.

My truck is lowered and I told them to make it line up to not happen again, and now it sits almost flat straight

Do it yourself, shouldnt take more than a couple hours your first time.. It would probably take me 45 minutes now that I have done it a few times.

Depends if it's just the U Joint. I was quoted 1k for a drive shaft after I warped it several years ago. Burned out the carried bearing and apparently it's a 2 for 1 deal (so I was told). It was fixed under warranty so didn't cost me a thing. Just going in what they said. However, didn't look like a hard job.

Am I reading that wrong or are they trying to charge you for two carrier bearings?

And 660$ in labor... sheesh, that is insane, any somewhat capable mechanic should be able to do this in well under 2 hours.

This is the first major repair I've had to do on my truck since I bought it 2 years ago. I hit 100k last month and all of a sudden it sounds like nails on a chalk board backing up ..

That estimate is for replacing the carrier bearings in the front differential. As in, ring gear bolted to the carrier, and the carrier spins on 2 tapered roller bearings. Even if your truck did need new front differential carrier bearings, there's sure to be a bunch more stuff needed too. Pinion bearings, seals, gear oil, etc. Besides all that, those bearings don't even turn in 2wd.

The more I read that invoice the more I get annoyed with shops like this... I would love to talk to the "tech" that takes a half hour to remove and replace one u joint.
