Probably the best line in the whole article. I do agree overall though. I looked at used Tacomas for over 2 years but couldnt justify paying what they sell for with what I wanted. I wasnt going to settle with an almost what I wanted option if I was spending over 20k. If I could have found a deal for what I was wiling to pay I would be in a 2nd gen. Since I couldnt I just bought a new 3rd gen and am very happy with my purchase. I plan on keeping the truck forever!

These trucks have a cult like following. Used ones are usually snapped up quickly if they are in any kind of decent condition. I think the old law of supply and demand really applies to Taco's, and that puts the seller in the drivers seat.

Toyota rarely have sale incentives for tacomas and there is a high demand for them. Look at American trucks. Incentives usually put the price about $10k lower than the sticker price. That does nothing for keeping their value.

I know I shopped for weeks and had to travel about an hour and a half to find what I considered a good deal. No complaints though.

Yeah, the used market's insane. I had to replace my Subaru last year and really needed a truck with all the festival gear I haul, so I wound up spending over 6 months looking for something in my price range that wasn't falling apart. Most of the prices out there are ridiculous or the truck is rusted out. I'm happy with the one I found, but damn it took forever to find it.

When I bought my PreRunner, about 6 months later I started looking for a 4x4. It took another 6 months before I found a deal good enough with the options I wanted to pull the trigger on.

Couldnt find the truck I wanted for a 'reasonable' used price

Ended up buying new, pleased with my decision.

My truck was a year old with 16k miles and was about $2.5k off what a new truck was running. But it came with a camper shell and all the options I was looking for along with a 7yr 100k mile warranty.

A new one like mine would have been double the price I paid. I just couldn't see paying that much for a truck that looks almost the same.

The cab of the 2nd and 3rd gens look the same to me, the doors and windows look like a direct fit. Even the bed and the side compartments look the same.

If I didn't work at a Lexus dealership that this auto group also has a Toyota dealership, I probably still wouldn't be driving a Tacoma. Granted I still pay a good bit over cost as an employee. And it still took a while to find a truck I wanted at a price I wanted to pay. Because the dealership is also putting a lot of money into the trade ins. At least more than you think they reasonably should.

I haven't thought about selling mine, but I'll tell you the price of FJ's are up there too. I've been looking at them lately and thinking about making the switch.

To find a decent used one 4x4 with less than 100k on the clock you are looking at close to $20k!
