We have only had hail here once in 26 years--we did have a small "Florida" style tornado go through on June 6th--100 mph winds for 40 seconds or so. Lost quite a few limbs on maples and water oaks but the carport (new on May 9) and the Taco came through OK...

The issue of sand and other abrasive crap getting up under the cover, and then when the cover gets blown about scratching the paint is real--one of those DAMHIK things...

Wish I had the luxury of parking in the garage but the race car is far too easy to steal so the Tacoma sits outside.

I check it every morning for sap and bird droppings and when they happen, I remove them immediately with a damp cloth.

Only thing that bugs me is the leafs that get stuck in the wiper holes :/

Covers are best used inside when the car is clean. Otherwise you probably do more damage by dragging the cover against the surface of the paint. Just my opinion from storing various rare sports cars in the garage over the years..

OP, Toyota has always had shitty paint, I don't think a car cover will help it much. I'd get a dust prof cover, and cover it in 4mil poly when it rains. I had to keep a really nice car on trailer for a few months and that's what I did. Car looked new when I uncovered. Car cover was a CA Dust Proff cover and it was almost $400.

That being said, it's a truck I wouldn't even think of covering it.

And the ones that find there way to the fresh air intake. I take the cabin filter out every month or 2 and blow it our. Amazes me what gets trapped in the filter...
