FWIW, that gear chart doesnt apply to the 05+ Tacomas.

All 6 lug Tacomas have the 8.4" rear end except TRD off road which has the 8"

All V6 six luggers have the 3.73 gears

4 banger six juggers have the 4.10 gears.

    "A" is open
    "C" is LSD

So from what I've seen here my taco is open diff (as I expected). On my door jam on the bottom of the label didn't have an "A04A" but did have an "A05A" (08 Regular Cab 2wd.). But it appears that the census is that the "A's" have it for an open diff.

Plan on changing my diff. oil next week and have found RP 75W-90 locally. Is the combined opinion on this forum that this is amongst the best for the rear diff? My manual stated straight 90. I wish to put the best since this Taco is my last truck.

    Thanks...

for an open diff(even for an lsd)......royal purple makes an excellent diff oil. it will work fine in your trucks rear diff.

I thought I mentioned those codes only apply to the first genners.

An easy way to check for an open differential versus LSD:

    - With engine off, put transmission in park or 1st gear and chock front wheels. Release parking brake.

    - Jack up the rear end under the differential case until rear wheels are off the ground. Use a block of wood in between the jack and diff. case to even out the load.

    - Try spinning one of the rear wheels. If it spins, and the other wheel spins the opposite direction, you've got an open differential. If the wheel doesn't spin, you've got the clutch type LSD (and need the friction additive).

    Hope this helps :)

In some cases, an open diff will have both tires rotate the same way.

That's interesting, care to explain how (other than leaving the transmission in neutral)? I'm no expert, just learn things along the way, so I'm curious.
