If anybody ever asks why I live in the Pacific Northwest, here is a very small example of one of the many reasons. While not a gnarly trail, a quick trip to the top of Burly Mountain has huge payoff - perfect when my parents, two-and-a-half year old, and six month old are all in the truck. From this one high point, you can see Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St. Helens clearly.

Could it be done? I think so, but wouldn't advise it.
In the case of Black Bear, the extra gearing coming down into Telluride is in my opinion very necessary (3-5 point turns on a switchback aimed mostly down hill), and the extra traction the front tires give as the rear slips will help keep things going the right direction.

Clearance would be fine, traction up would be fine it's the one way descent into Telluride that stops me from recommending it to a pre-runner.

If you've got balls of steel. I wouldn't be comfortable in a 2WD. Guessing you've never seen the trail?

To kind of further this discussion, I'm planning a trip to the San Juans the 2nd week of September, with my oldest boy. I'm thinking Alpine Loop, Ophir, Imogene, and probably a few other easier side trails (not Black Bear). Stock TRD Off Road, right down to the tires. Will the truck have any problems with any of these? I was thinking about getting different tires, but it seems like a waste at this point because so far, I like them.

You'll be fine I'm sure. I know some of the trails are closed due to rock slide but can't remember off the top of my head which ones.
