The main reason for a plate bumper is increased clearance and increased protection off-road. The stock bumper hangs so low, so it doesn't make sense for someone to leave it on if they don't have to. Most of these aftermarket bumpers bolt into the bumper and hitch mounting holes, and the hitch's in them are way overbuilt, albeit not rated. These integrated hitch's are likely stronger than the ones that are on the truck to begin with.

I kind of get where he is coming from though. A lot of guys trailer heavy weight with their trucks, and the whole peace of mind think is understandable. Because we can't tow rate our bumper might make some people uneasy actually towing from it.

I will say this, we have had people tow from our bumper with no issues and I have towed from our bumpers on our second and third gen Tacoma's with no issues.

@Blackout14 trailered some serious weight off our high clearance rear bumper. I am sure he will toss some pics in here when he gets his butt out of bed.

Hmmm, that makes me more comfortable with this, as im pulling the max tow rating, with a fully loaded truck 10/12 months of the year.

Sounds like Matt is ready for a Mobtown bumper.

yup. im not normally loaded that heavy. the only place the truck ever struggled was in the Western MD Mountains, and even then it just required a downshift and to climb at 55 instead of 70

I do trust that these plate bumpers can hold some serious weight, but for me as someone not really worried about clearance (dont offroad much) and more worried about getting hassled by pd for the flip up license plate im not ready to give up the hitch. But i also worry that in a worst case if you had an accident someone would go after you legally for not having the rated hitch.
