My son totaled out my 2001 Four door V6 and luckily he wasn't hurt. We had done a lot of upgrade's to that truck. I have found the exact same truck with body damage to the back and my parts would replace the parts on other truck that were damaged I can get for 5,000 with 270,000 miles with V6. I think I can buy my truck for 1500 salvaged and I think it would make a great parts truck. Some things are gone and will not work. The fan was pushed back into the engine and the engine had 295,000 so its gone. The drive line was broke but I can still use the OEM coils and shocks on the front. The OEM leaf springs on the back minus one that was broke.

Glad your son wasn't hurt. Don't know about that. Depends on how hard you and your son want to work at tearing one apart and putting a new one together.

    Glad he was OK !!

Only you can know just what you want to do .

If you have lots of Aftermarket parts worst case you can part it out.

Don`t forget to check the frame on the new truck

Sorry to hear that, but glad he's OK!

I'd think it would be a worth while investment if the cost of the parts in need of replacement on the new truck are over $1500. You could always part out the rest of the salvage truck to re-coup extra cost.

That's too bad. Glad your boy wasn't hurt. When you say your son totaled your truck out, I guess you mean he was at fault in the wreck. If true, that really sucks..

Sounds like a plan. If you do the work yourself, with your son helping you, you should come away with a good replacement truck - which will make the whole experience at least somewhat positive..

I know what it is to have a kid of mine wreck one of my cars, then work with me to find the parts and put it back together. So good luck with your new project, and keep us posted as it progresses!..

i think that parting out and swapping parts you can make money over your 1500$ buy back from insurance investment. the question is really do you have the time and tools to go through all of that. personally i would just walk away from a totaled truck but my brothers friend just made himself an extra $1800 by finding the right buyer for his totaled car which he bought back from insurance. It sat in the driveway for 6 months, but he came out on top.

    I was thik
I was thinking the same thing. Strong, long lasting motors but that's getting up there.

If you talk him down to 4K, a JDM 3.4 with under 75k can be had for just under a grand. Boom, fresh motor.

My son feel asleep on his way to work. Summer job and he had made enough money for new rims and I purchased the tires. My truck is totaled but the 2001 I'm looking at is not been a bad wreck. The back quarter panel has a dent and the front bumper has a dent. I think the guy just backed into a tree and the bumper I don't know. Body of truck really looks good. My leather seats are in mint condition and from the cab to back of truck is very good. My transmission was rebuilt a year ago. This truck would be for me. Son has to buy his next truck because this is second wreck and is barely 17.

I'd only do it if you want your son to learn all of this stuff. It could be how he earns his new vehicle ;)

I would just go ahead and assume double the amount of work you already anticipated. There are always little bits and pieces that need to be replaced, and with high mileage trucks, there WILL be more than just the stuff that was damaged from the wreck. You could use the time to replace all the normal wear parts, and end up with basically a new truck.

It will be a lot of work I'm sure, but if you like projects, it will work out in the end. If you and your son do it together, even better!

Just about every vehicle I ever bought had a salvage title.

Sometimes vehicles are totaled with very little damage but till you figure the new parts and labor it does not take long .

If you want to do this go for it.

Like any where the regional price for these trucks is based on supply and demand

Did frame damage total your truck? If the frame was good isn't that alone worth a grand?
