Took my truck into the dealer this morning, described the issue I'm having-it stutters when I try to accelerate quickly-and asked that they address it. Get a call before works over that it's all set to go. I arrive and the usual bs begins. They tell me they can't reproduce the symptoms so theres nothing they can do. Then the "thats normal for these trucks" bs. The tech agreed to ride with me and wouldn't you know it... It stuttered pulling onto the main road. Repeated this several times. So they're keeping my truck to go over things tomorrow. I feel like they won't solve the issue so I'm wondering what steps to take to get them to listen and address this? Can it be the crank position sensor?

    Thanks

They'll just end up concluding it's normal for the vehicle because I don't believe it's a problem they (Toyota) are willing to actually fix. Oh it's normal but not acceptable. Just another reason I'll be dumping the Turd Gen in a couple of years and will not consider another Tacoma.

First, and likely, my last Tacoma. These aren't the quality I expected and Toyotas responsiveness is terrible.

I'm going to wait for the new Tundra before deciding on what to do with the TACO

They'll reset your ecu and it'll solve the issue for a month depending on how many miles you drive then it will return to the lag or stutter when driving slowly. I'm just saving up coin to get the OV tune at this point.

I think the OV Tune is having issues with the stuttering too and are working to try to solve the issue. I could be wrong on that but I thought I saw a thread on it the other day.

It seems that way and I read what sounded like that after posting this. I'll let Toyota know on my next service again and I was already planning on waiting for a good while on the OV Tune (I'll let other work out the kinks.) Not to mention you never know if your issue is the same as someone else's because you're just reading a description not experiencing it.

    Describe stutter.

The one time I think I experienced this was a u-turn attempt on the busy main road of my city. Kinda scary.

On the turn it felt like I lost all power. I had to coax the rpm's back up by feathering the gas pedal, but it took a couple of seconds. It wasn't a stutter. Power just vanished.

I believe right after is when I started using the ECT button for the next 4 weeks.

The u-turn experience was in the first few days of ownership. ECT for a month following that. After that month, I have been running for a month without using the ECT button.

No more mishaps but I've been driving pretty aggressively.

Mine did this very noticeably at lower RPM's (~1800-2000 RPM) trying to do a quicker type of pull in 2nd gear. Horrible stuttering, lack of torque, surging power until it got up to about 2500-3000rpm.

I had a manual transmission and found that the truck really needed to be driven more like a 4 cylinder sports car that likes high RPM's and to breathe. But wait...with only a 6k redline and the engine not even being able to breathe correctly past 5k rpm (as stated by the OVtune guys), you really have a very narrow, 2k RPM (3000-4800/5000) useful power band with the Tacoma. Unless you want to drive like a snail, it does fine if you apply absolutely minimal gas at low RPMs and don't mind being passed around town by a stock '69 VW bug.

I'll be honest with you OP, I went through this with a dealer and it was all deemed normal. It was one of the large reasons I sold the truck. Maybe we will find out it was faulty CKP issues all along or something else, maybe a tune will fix it all, but you'll have to hang tight as right now it is normal.

AT fluid was supposedly checks at first service. Could have them double check that. Ckp sensor the same as Crank position sensor? I mentioned that to them but I'm guessing if I ask for a replacement I'll pay for that one... I too have heard the OV tune has this issue. Dunno, but this is very frustrating and it's dangerous...

yes that's the crank position sensor, and the VIN range for the recall has been defined... but it may appear that the VIN range isn't fully correct yet. so far the OV tune is revealing some things but at this point (last i checked today) the OV tune itself is not the cause of any issue with the stutter. you will not get the dealer to include you under warranty for that sensor if you're not in the VIN range.

    My truck is perfect
It had both headlights replaced under warranty due to condensation
    No other issues

    Raptor/tundra/ranger raptor time

    Time for something new

My plan as well. Maybe they'll issue an official fix in the meantime? I'm not interested in investing more money into this truck (whether it be a tune or whatnot) as it could be on its way out. You can polish a turd, but it's still crap.

Yours sounds like traction control kicking in. Which makes sense if you were doing a UTurn. Your tires probably broke traction and it jumped in. It will cut power.
