Original price sticker for this model with sport shell was $29,700.

I paid $17,500 out of door price ( without the sport shell)

So yeah... 40% less is quite of expensive for 15 yr old , but oh well as long we like our own ride then all good

Don't know what part of the country you're in, but on the west coast, $17K for a clean, presumably rust-free, ultra-low-mileage double cab with a rear locker and cap, is a decent deal. I would have no problem paying that. I wouldn't be surprised to see a truck like that at a dealer for $19-20K.

I met a guy last summer that drove 3 hours to pay $18K for a very similar truck (silver low-mileage stock DC w/cap). Can't confirm the rear locker though. The rear locker is a huge plus in my book if you intend to do some wheeling. Having that little magic button saved my butt several times.

So, now that you finally scored (emphasis on "scored") the truck that traveled through time 15 years to get to you, what are your plans?

I don't have the sticker in front of me but it was $25,199 after some discount and $27,925 out the door in October of 02. AZ car mostly, CA past year. It was a 3 hour drive for me too as all Tacoma's seem to be in Sacramento or San Diego and none were ever near by. The guy I bought it from had 5 cars and I am assuming no kids. Considering the only other truck I saw with similar low miles was in North Carolina or something and listed for $18k, I think the convenience of only having to drive 3 hours was well worth it. Plus no rust issues. And I live in a suntrap so white was the ideal color (not a fan of silver for some reason). I was also fairly demanding in my schedule to see it and getting it checked out before hand, so it worked out for me this time. I'd missed out on trucks before to less picky buyers.

Honestly, I was surprised nobody offered more than $17. He had other offers of $16,500 and $16,750. When I first said $17 I figured he'd get $18,500 or more, but I don't think he had it advertised well. His ad had a picture of the window sticker with no mention of mileage or that it was a double cab. The last double cab I test drove was listed for $14k, had 160k miles, a body lift and a grease covered interior. There is a nice tacoma at a dealer in Miramar with 100k miles for $18k with no cap but new all terrain tires. There seems to be a big divide here in going a bit above $15,000 or below.

Plans: Icon stage 3/4 or the Kings/Fox equivalent, all terrains and probably a regear, rock sliders and a sound system. I also like the look of bug/wind deflectors so I'll be doing that. I have a lot of research to do. Front/rear bumpers at a later date maybe.

As a side note, are there TRD off roads without an e-locker? I've had a couple people ask me if it has one but I thought that was part of the package.

 

Looks like a solid plan. As for the rear locker, maybe they were standard on the 4x4s. But, I'm pretty I've seen TRD PreRunners without them. Whenever I see a TRD for sale, I look for the button on the dash.

 

That's not bad at all. I paid 16k for mine, it's an 03 that had 55k when I bought it. The truck did have a full roll age and all suspension work done, but I've since rebuilt everything from the cab back. I think I got a smoking deal even though I rebuilt a lot of stuff.

 

We have some intense flooding going on here in Northern IL. Many roads are not accessible.

It is nothing special at the moment. For now I just trap a tarp with the Snug Top hatch and drape it over an open tailgate. Good for warm climate camping only. Inside, I use a couple U-Haul moving blankets under a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag. The bed is to short for me to sleep in diagonally, but if I get a sleeping platform up above the wheel well, it will work. That is my next DIY project.

I am curious too. The previous owner rarely, if ever, used the dif lock on mine. It took a while to engage the first time. Now it works just fine.

 

I had the same issue. I bought my truck from my gf, and she took it from her ex in the divorce. She's pretty sure he never used it off road and I'm positive she never did. It takes some encouragement to engage/disengage the locker sometimes. I'm glad I have it though.

 

I almost didn't buy mine because I couldn't get the locker to engage and thought it might be the actuator, which is apparently $1,300. Finally figured it out. The wave of relief once that light stopped blinking was enormous.

 

So, what's to figure out?
I have no test 4wd and e-lock yet, can i engage 4low and try the lock option under normal street? I know , so lazy or busy to go OR

 

You don't have to be on dirt to test it. You can only engage in low. Just drive in a straight line. Turning on asphalt puts too much stress on things. You should hear it engage and your ABS and RR Locker lights come on. If the locker light blinks, it's not engaged.
