Hello All! I have searched the forum, but have not yet found a good answer to exactly what my truck is doing. 1997 reg cab 4x4

My Tacoma cranks very long when starting, but only after I have just turned it off, such as running to the store, or starting the following morning after driving it the day before. If it sits for longer than 2 days, then it starts right up! I have no idea what could be causing this, its just weird, but it does this consistently.

    I have already:
-replaced spark plugs- noticed cyl #1 plug was a little wet and smelled strongly of fuel, others looked good.
    -replaced fuel pump
    -replaced starter
    -had battery tested
    -cleaned MAF

My plug wires look good, but maybe they are bad? Coil pack? I don't want to keep buying parts that don't need replacing though!

The truck runs great when started, and has 143,000 miles. Any guesses as to what could be causing this starting issue?
    Thanks for your help!

Maybe its running too rich..I'd take a peek at the injectors especially in cyl #1 also the maf/intake manifold might need to be cleaned.

I have a similar but opposite problem. Mine cranks long if it sits. If I drive it and park it like at a store it starts right up.
    I've replaced
Fuel pump, injectors cam position sensor. Still same issue
I Plan on replacing crank position sensor soon, I'll let you know if that helps

Forgot to mention I cleaned my MAF, added to original post. I read a little about the crank and cam sensors before, but I thought I would get a CEL if they were bad.

I am no Toyota expert but I have over 30 years in GM service department, "long crank to start" usually points to a bad or failing Fuel pump relay. especially in hi mileage vehicles engine
oil pressure keeps a closed circuit, keeping power to the fuel pump all the time. when starting(key is turned) there is no oil pressure. a relay is activated immediately powering the fuel pump,
to keep from having to wait for the oil pressure to build. and avoid long crank situations. If the relay is internal of the ECU as it is in a lot of newer vehicles, this could get to be real expensive.
I don't think a bad injector will cause the symptoms you are describing. Best of luck

Quite possible #1 injector leaking down. Leaked fuel would dissipate over time. Would explain hard hot start. I would replace all four.

Fuel injectors need replacing. Put a test gauge on the fuel rail. If it drops 10 pounds of rail pressure within 10 min after shutdown then replace fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator and pulsation damper. You didn't mention your fuel filter being replaced. If you have yet to do so start there.

Thanks guys, the injectors seem like a likely culprit of the issue. I did the fuel filter when I did the fuel pump. I will replace those injectors and see if that solves the issue!

Before you swap injectors, check the fuel rail pressure after shut down. It should retain pressure for a good bit. If it falls quickly (within 5-10 min) then your fuel pressure regulator and pulsation damper could be sticking making fuel pressure escape. If the damper and regulator are good (you can attempt to back blow on it with your mouth to test them) then replace injectors.

    UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED!

You all were right about the injectors- I finally got around to replacing them this afternoon along with a new fuel pressure regulator. Voila! Truck almost starts instantly! Put in a new iridium spark plug in cyl 1 (matches the other spark plugs) and new denso plug wires after that, just to complete the tune up. Truck runs like new- Thanks everyone for your help!

Radarninja, I have the a similar situation as yours. Did you end up solving the problem with the crank position sensor?

Was your problem solved after replacing the crank position sensor?

If I remember correctly I replaced the CPS and the MAF sensor at the same time.
Anyhow the problem went away after that. I’m leaning to MAF. But am not positive.
