I really wanted to like this truck but I couldn't get around all of the problems now at 14,600 miles.

The engine and transmission really just does not shift right even tho I had the dealer install 2 different transmission updates. When I step on the gas and pull out into traffic the motor feels like it is going to die on me. I spent a bunch of cash running high octane and it does the same thing no matter what gas I put in it.

The hood has been shaking on the freeway and it looks like somebody stuck chewing gum in between the hood sheet metal and the support braces underneath.

Finally the dealer said they had to confiscate my truck for the rear end leaking. It already makes a woooooowooo noise on the highway which is really annoying.

Now most recently the leaf springs are squeaking and I have only driven down one dirt road since i owned it. They cleaned them out twice and after not even 3,000mi they start squeaking again.

I am just sick of this truck so I think I am going back to General Motors because I had much better luck an experience with my old chevy!

Wondering if anyone has private sold their new tacoma or if you are getting better numbers on trade?

When I dump my turd, I do it on the toilet. Now my 3rd Gen, I drive the shit out of it.

OP- what has your dealer said about the hood? And what did they give you for a loaner while they have your truck?

Oh and I will keep paying my taxes so Government Motors can keep building.

Does it really matter what other's opinions about trading it are? Clearly you aren't happy and probably never will be if you haven't grown fond of it after nearly 15k miles.

Give it a try and see what happens. Obviously you can only trade at the dealer it sits at now unless you can get the keys back.

At the end of the day what's the worst that can happen?

Your engine / trans gripe is the real core. Everything else is fixable. Either by warranty or a little effort by you (springs)

That said, I've always found selling to be better for me than trading. Some folks disagee for various reasons. And it may be harder to sell a high dollar item like this on your own.

So, just trade it for what you want. Depending on how you use the vehicle a 4 Runner might work. Likely to get your best deal at a Toyota place.

I got $32k for my TRD DCSB OR 4WD (no tech package, just tow package) with 13k miles last month when moving to my 17. I paid $35k for it new...just gotta find the right dealer willing to work on trade with you, resale is strong for our trucks despite the nonsense discussion on here.

I would try another dealer and see if they can help you out - otherwise just dump it.

Sounds like the OP was another buyer who assumed a Tacoma was the perfect truck based on reputation for being popular.

How upside down are you on the truck?

2 things, 1st- it's a shame so many are blinded to think all the 3rd gens are shit, after driving my 17 for about 9 months, I am very happy with my 3rd gen DCSB Sport.
2nd- I am so thankful I did not find TW until after I ordered my truck, as I think I would have fallen victim to the few loud voices here preaching how bad the turd gen is.

Enjoy that 13, I loved my 09 and from what I hear around these parts, that was also one of the worse years for tacos. Spend some time in a 3rd gen, then make the decision about the 13 being better.

haha hey I actually like the 3rd gens. but I couldn't accept the fact that the higher trim packages cost the same as a half ton. so I saved my money and bought a 2nd gen straight out.

What is this shaking hood problem?......I have the 17 OR so no hood scope and it's solid as a rock, no shaking or movement ( highway or otherwise)...was this a 16 issue? hoods with fake cowl only?

The off roads hoods where coming apart, think it was on the 16s, don't know if any 17s have the issue.

Traded mine yesterday, got $32 for it (16 TRD OR)...unfortunately I paid $36 for it only 6 months ago. I loved the physical truck, but the engine / trans is just horrible with no aftermarket support on the horizon. The constant downshifting on the freeway to maintain 75-80 going up slight incline was not cool. Look at the "for sale" section on this forum, there are private party trucks all over the place that aren't selling...

    Best of luck!

They should have just kept producing the first gen, the way Nissan did with the Tsuru in Mexico.

Ya the price is up there, but to get a manual in a reasonable amount of time, I just ordered. If I saw a good 2nd gen manual, I would have considered it. But hearing what some folks paid for used 2nd gens, the 3rd was only a few grand more.
