Oil drain crush washers

    I have a 2012 Tacoma and a 2016 Camry and i do all of my maintenance by myself. I've been changing my own oil for 40 years now.

    When I first bought my truck, the Toyota oil drain crush washers were blue and loosening the drain bolt took the same amount of effort as tightening it.

    A couple of years ago Toyota switched to a black crush washer and I noticed that the drain bolt became very easy to remove....it was nowhere as tight as I had originally tightened it. Concerned about the bolt falling out, I'll retighten the bolt between oil changes.

    Has anybody else noticed the? It has to be a deformation of the crush washer over time.

    6inch lift sitting on bilstein coilovers. Lexus is300 studs in front to keep stock wheels, general grabber red letters, nfab front bumper.
    Torque the drain plug to spec and you won't have a problem. If you start noticing an oil leak around the drain plug it's time for a new crush washer. If your really paranoid they make drain plugs that are able to be safety wired. Mark the drain plug with a sharpie or nail polish and see if it turns by itself if your that concerned.

    Black crush washer? The ones I get with my filters are silver, I assume aluminum.

    Can do an oil change with zero tools, and no mess to clean up.

    How do you get the filter off without tools?
    My 2.7 l 4 cyl doesn't have a crush washer on the drain plug, there's a rubber gasket. No leaks.

    I hand tighten+ quarter turn the oil filter. Next time you change the filter, you can twist it off easy.

    The problem with the fumoto valve is my oil pan and tranny pan had significant dents in them and I had to change them both out.

    Don't ask me how that happens lol but the crossmambers only had scratches.

    I don't change my oil when the engine is hot. Only mildly warm.

    The mere mentioning of these drive me nuts. Why risk losing your oil if that component fails? What is the issue with removing a drain plug that makes it worth the risk?

    Maybe because a shit load of people run these and I haven't heard of any failing. Especially if you get that little plastic clip on it.

    I have yet to read a failure of these on this website. I've had mine for 5 years now and never a problem and I do my oil changes twice a year.

    You don't need the clip, the valve itself requires you to push in on the lever and then turn, it's not like you can just turn the lever.
