@scottalot on the way home stopped at Bi-lo and scored a 17.12 lb butt for $22 bucks. Half of it is being brined now and the other half is in the freezer.

 

Chestnut Mt Rd update for anyone who is/was thinking of driving it... We went almost to the SC border and for the most part in my stock truck, it was good fun. Not really a challenge until you cross over the Horsepasture River. There are ups and downs, switchbacks, mud holes, plenty of rocks, couple of creek crossings, but any of the modified trucks aren't going to have any trouble with it. Fun ride, but nothing really technical. You do need 4wd for some of the climbs, but a rear locker and good tires might cut it.

After crossing the river it definitely gets more interesting, but again not going to pose a real challenge to modded trucks. Wife spotted me a couple of times, and I had to use 2lo once on the way back out to get over a stubborn rock lip, and that was it.

In talking to a lady at the visitor's center, she said Auger Hole Trail meets up with Musterground Rd on the SC side, but there is a gate that supposedly never opens. We're going to investigate this further. If there is a way through it could easily double the length of the ride.

I don't know how well this area would serve for a TW run. Maybe half a dozen trucks would be okay, but any more than that and the getting in and out becomes a challenge. There are no open areas for turning around and parking and such except where Chestnut Mt Rd meets Auger Hole Trail (Turkeypen Gap), and Auger Hole crosses Horsepasture River. Where Auger Hole crosses the river there are prime camping spots, though. There were probably 6 or 7 vehicles squeezed in there camping today. Completely primitive. Someone had a poop bucket sitting on the side of the trail.

That's pretty much it. About 3 hours in and out with one stop to eat some dang good watermelon.

 

I'll make it up that hill with enough speed. Don't need no dang 4wd.

 

I forgot to turn my dash cam off and all the off road footage got over-written with highway footage.

 

So are we getting drunk again tonight? Asking for a friend.
