If it was easy, I guess everyone would be doing it. I will say my oxy/acetylene welds back in high school were a damn sight prettier. Just like many things, repetition is the key to mastery.

 

Just found a cheapo one on Amazon and had a bottle of 75/25 from cyberweld

I figure $50 to at least get everything mobile and if it's a POS I can always upgrade later, but it gets it all off my shelf and gives me more motivation to weld. Generous Mr. Jerry over at BAMF let me raid his scrap pile so I've got some crap I can practice on.

It's a small 110v/135a unit.

 

That's what I want to do eventually, but thought I'd give flux core a shot in the meantime. Messy stuff.

 

I bought a cheapo harbor freight 90 amp to play with. Now I'm undecided between the Lincoln 140 or 180.

 

Maybe you could make one?

Use some kind of technique to hold metal things together. Like glue but better than glue maybe.

I almost went the HF route. Ended up going with Eastwood. It's MIC, but it gets good reviews (for what they're worth). I think what sold me was it can handle 1/4", according to Eastwood. I don't foresee welding anything thicker than that.

I learned to weld on a old 110 Montgomery Wards buzz box. Worked great but the duty cycle was only about a minute long so you had to weld quick. Then I took a year of special projects (welding class) in college. Got pretty good at it but that was over 20 years ago

I could probably afford that unit if I sold off all my extra bicycle parts and frames.
