So I took my 2017 Tacoma in on Friday for the 10K service...I'm at 9,900 miles right now. During the service, they discovered that my rear diff has a minor leak and so does the transfer case. My Tacoma is not on the recall list. The service manager called me into the service bay area and showed me where the leaks were. The tech took photos of the leaks and notified Toyota. They also reflashed the transmission for me after requesting the update. They found no other issues and completed the 10K service.

I was then told that the repair parts were ordered and that I could continue to drive my truck under normal driving conditions (basically commuting to/from work) until the parts were in for them to address the issues. I was a bit surprised that my truck didn't have to stay, considering all the posts I've read about Tacoma's being kept at the dealers until repaired. I was advised that the parts were about 1-2 months out...

If your truck was part of the recall, then they would want to keep the truck and put you in a loaner. Because it's not in the recall list, that's why they let you go and will call you when parts arrive

Nothing new for Toyota over the past decade and a 1/2 unfortunately. Look at the frame recalls for Tacomas/Tundras which are well into their 2nd decade with no definite end in sight. I suppose it's also possible that it would be a monumental task to do a massive recall that covers all effected models and there just isn't the capacity (at the parts or service level) to handle them all at once so they are doing it in sections...who knows.

You have a dealer w/common sense. Be grateful!

Feel free to use the vehicle any way you normally would. There is nothing magical about restricting yourself to commuting only.
