I have an older fiberglass shell about 6 feet long, currently on a 94 Nissan King Cab D21 4x4 (not a perfect fit - 1.5 or 2 inches too short) but I think it was originally bought for a 2d gen Tacoma. The finish surface is pitted in places over sizable areas. Where this is happening it almost looks like chipped paint - it's rough and the "pits" are grayish in color (the shell is white). Can this be repaired? Would it be done by painting or some other kind of resurfacing? Just my impression, but the surface looks too rough for paint to build it up to a smooth surface.

I know nothing about fiberglass in case that's not obvious. Looking for both possible DIY and pro solutions.
