Front brakes w/ 16" rims

While I'd love to be able to go the route of the DIY big brake kit (see here), it appears that no one has successfully done it w/ 16" rims. Makes sense w/ the lack of space.

Sure, it'd be nice to go to 17" rims, but that's costly

I see a fair amount of people are starting to run the

$182 power stop k137 front Z23 carbon-fiber ceramic brake pads and drilled slotted rotors brake kit for 2007-2014 toyota FJ cruiser | 2005-2022 toyota tacoma 6 lug | 2003-2009 4runner 12.56" rotors

power stop k137 stuff now. I'm figuring that may be my best route as far as a possible upgrade at this point w/ 16" rims.

Two questions:

Any obvious front brake upgrades I may have overlooked?
Anyone running slotted rotors, did you notice how fast they warped (compared to solid rotors) on our trucks?

I'm running EBC's Stage IV slotted rotor kit with their pads. Good stuff! Fits fine with my 16" wheels.

 

Seems like there's more tire/wheel options with 17's. Some companies aren't even making tires for wheels smaller than 17's

 

This. Next year I think I'm gonna get a set of 17s and mount up some 37x12.5x17s can't find anything in a 37 for a 16 that I like. As for the big brakes, that's on my list.

I found a high-quality big brake kit that works with 16" OEM 6-lug wheels:

On that page, in the drop-down options there's a selector for "TR323 Slotted Rotors - Fit 16" or larger wheels".

I contacted rep from SOS Performance & he confirmed that this kit will work with 16" or larger wheels.

I haven't ordered yet. If I do I will post a build/install update & review here.

Side note: I called Wilwood's tech support dept. to see if there are any Wilwood options that would fit a 16" Tacoma 6-lug wheel. The tech I spoke with said, "That's a good question.." After a minute or two of going through his database he confirmed that as of this time (3/22/2022) there are no part#s / SKUs that would make it work.

 

I'm running Stoptech slotted rotors with sport pads on 16s and haven't had any issues. Installed 2020.

 

If you have 05 calipers that's the first thing to rebuild or replace then I have the powerstop drilled/slotted rotors with z36 pads and stops great. If you have stock 05 brake lines time for an upgrade and flush the system. Mine are stock TRD offroad 16" alloys beat up and will continue to be. No rotor warping. After 55k I replaced the powerstop complete front stuff could have gone up to maybe 70k but when I pulled it apart for the calipers just did them. Did the rears at 125k new pads and drums too but those don't do much braking but parking brake in mts is used (cable adjustment under the center console). Many posts on brake combos on site so good hunting.
