Well, with only 521 miles on my new 2017 Tacoma 4x4, I changed the oil and filter. Mobil -1, 0-20 weight. The dealer told me to wait for 5000 miles. I was always told, do an oil change at 500 miles, “Old School.” Well, the skid plate is a pain in the ass to remove, the new type filter is even more a pain in the ass. But, I managed to get through it all in about 35 minutes. I did find a small amount of metal filings at the bottom of the filter canister. IMO...5000 miles is a bit too long to wait for the first oil change. Any other opinions here?

    Here's my .02's opinion.

I changed mine at 1200 & then at 5k and every 5k after that for life. I read a study that was done over some20 yrs ago by major engine manufacturers in which they outlined the major causes for engine wear concerns and narrowed it down to two.

Number one reason was that first start-up as in the morning.

When all the oil is in the sump and upon start up oil needs to flow quickly and freely to all components.
This was addressed by lowering the oil viscosity bit by bit and now we have 0-w20 synthetic as a mainstream recommendation, problem solved.

The other reason was done by oil changes.

Specifically, that first start-up after the oil change.
To combat that one, they increased the frequency of oil changes from 3-5k to 5-10k, and they moved to better specs and blends and now we have synthetic also as mainstream recommendation, and then they called it a day, problem solved.

But not so fast I say!

I change the old oil as severe like before yes, but there’s a better way.
I re-fill the oil filter before installing in the engine, and it won’t have that first dry spin start that causes engine wear to worry about.

    Problem solved for good!

And btw, this element/canister type makes it way easier to do.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil

‘For automotive use, the oil change interval for synthetic oils is the same as for conventional oil, typically 7,000 miles to 10,000 miles following the manufacturer's "severe service" schedule (which is the schedule that covers city driving). Oil needs to be changed because it gets contaminated with combustion by-products that accumulate at about the same rate regardless of oil type. Extending the oil change interval with synthetics is likely to contribute to engine damage and is not recommended’.

I think you're doing the right thing. I am currently running 8500 mile interval's on oil and filter changes after having an analysis done at 7500. Blackstone told me to add another 2000 miles to the last 7500 mile interval because the sample was so good. I went 8400 and some change this last time. I'll be sending it off for another analysis to see how it is at 8400+. I'm running Amsoil signature 10-30. 10,000 mile intervals for this oil are pretty much the norm. Many people don't know that the longer you run an oil between changes, the less wear you get. Within reason that is and depending on the oil used. Amsoil Signature "can" go as long as 25,000 miles in the right engine under the right conditions. If I can get to 10,000 miles with a filter change every 5000 I'll be thrilled. I'm running a Mobil 1 filter which is good for 15,000 so I'm not changing the filters at 5000 miles at this point. If I get to 10,000 on the oil I'll feel safer with 5000 between filter changes.

Blackstone labs just published an article proving this to be the case. Weird, huh?

Got anything to back that up. Ive heard of it over the years...but only hearsay with no facts to prove it.

Blackstone labs just published an article on the subject recently. I got an e-mail alert from them. Go to their website and I'm sure you can locate the article. They have a lot of evidence to back it up considering that they test engine oil for a living. I never knew it myself and like you, had heard it but never saw any proof. The Blackstone article proves it with facts and figures to back it up.
