Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

You are correct, they are absolutely marketing at least the 3rd gen primarily to yuppies. I remember the first 3rd gen commercial involved jumping dirt bikes etc. Not exactly looking to cater to the blue collar man there. They want young professional millennials, and it seems like it is working.

Not sure why people think Toyota would start making 1980's trucks again. The market clearly isn't there, and too be fair a shit box car now costs 12K-14K with a manual so you can only imagine what a limited production beater manual truck would fetch.

He used to be around here, he railed on Tacomas pretty regularly in a very similar fashion.

I'm technically not blue collar based on income, but I am based on lifestyle. The little sh@t at the dealership didn't even want to give me numbers on a new manual transmission Tacoma, I had to ask him twice to tell me where the closest one would be and what the asking price was... He made a smartass comment too about how "nobody buys those anymore, they're unicorns"...

Blue constantly posted about the death of manuals, his love of diesels, and in general his hate on for anything Toyota has done since 1980. Your comments just reminded me of how he started before he put himself on the ban wagon one too many times lol. Not saying you will get there or implying your comments are not valid.

Young 20 somethings want an automatic weekend warrior truck. The Tacoma is built for that. That group finances everything over 84 months at 5% which makes Toyota piles of money. It's not a mystery what is happening here, the sort of truck you would like doesn't make Toyota as much money as the sort of truck they are making now. Too be fair every other mid sized truck has gone down that same road to some extent.

Well, at least you guys are good sports about this. I still value every penny that I earn because I hate my job. The opportunity cost of an overpriced truck means extra months of my life worked doing something I hate...

Toyota is tipping the scales so far with the high prices and the millennial (am I spelling that right) owners want so much for their resale that the equation may not balance anymore, no matter how fun they are.

I can't begin to tell you how nuts that drives me, people who have no business buying a $35,000 vehicle drive one off and say "It only cost's me $399 a month, what a steal!" I just heard the other day (not sure if true or not) that the new fad for millennials is leasing low end luxury cars. So many people just have no idea what tomorrow means. I should probably point out that I am a millennial.

That is funny, that is exactly how I look at it. It is a smart way to look at things too. I like my job, but not as much as I will like being retired I think. I plan on running mine until it is dust for exactly that reason.

Speaking of work, I had better go get some sleep. Good luck, I'll catch you all later.

I have no problem with financing and I do think there is such a thing as an affordable monthly payment. That being said if you are paying much above the posted mortgage rate on large long term loans you are shooting yourself in the foot for sure.

Leasing luxury vehicles you can't afford isn't even close to being a new thing. One of my buddies from highschool is finance manager at a BMW dealership. Whenever BMW sales aren't where they'd like them to be they run a $299/month promo on 3-series base models. It works every time and most of those buyers are kids with their first real job trying to prove something with a white beamer.

Truth is it hasn't balanced for years. Why do you think so few large businesses run Toyota trucks in their fleets? They are expensive to run especially over a 2-3 year period of tough work conditions.

I'd never thought of that; but now that you mention it I do a double-take whenever I see a Tacoma fleet-truck... So... where does one go from here? My best girl dumped me and now I see Toyota in the window making out with soccer moms and millenials... a manual tranny and a 4X4 are a must for me to enjoy driving. I also want a truck bed to throw a dirtbike into... sooo... ???

I'm having difficulty understanding the OPs logic. Maybe someone can help me out. He's upset he can't buy a Tacoma and drive it (beat the $hit out of it) to his liking off road, because their resale value maintains a consistent above average price. The reason their resale value is high is because for the most part, people drive their tacos aggressively, while stopping short of beating the living $hit out of them, and in return their tacos give them hundreds of thousands of miles, 2, 3, 4...... All the while looking amazing in the process, they're the best looking trucks on the road.
Looks and personality, what's your beef bra?

well, you are partially correct. In my experience they DO NOT hold up better than other vehicles I've owned. They simply look nicer and are fun to drive... I think the "bulletproof" reputation is a myth that Toyota has taken to the bank... I'm pissed because it's not that Tacos are amazing, its' just that they are good trucks whereas other trucks like the s10's, Frontiers etc... I think are poor designs...

So... to make an analogy, it's like the one girl in your class who is a solid 7/10 suddenly thinks she is a 10 because all the rest of the girls are 3/10's and wants you to take her to lobster dinners on every date... maybe time to transfer schools?
