Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

Maybe you should not be so hard on them? Abuse (abuse = doing something 20% or so over design criteria (constantly), + maintenance neglect) will kill a rock.

They ARE durable. They can be used hard and well maintained, last long.

I can take you to the remote mountains of Guatemala and put you in any number of Tacomas that are over 20yo, over 300k when the odo broke, see duty you can't even imagine, are cobbled together with bailing wire and duct tape (literally) yet they start, run, and go places 80% of the folks on this board would never consider taking their parking lot queens.

I do agree Tacomas are over priced in N America. Loan values and insurance values are much more reflective of real value, and those numbers are much less than sales prices. But as long as people pay, that's the way it will be.

So I tend to agree with your personal concept. It sounds like you are a use it, neglect it, toss it guy. If that's the case, buy Nissans, S10s, Rangers, etc. You can get one of those already half clapped out, run it till it's dead, and have spent less money than payments on a Tacoma would have been over the same time period.

BTW, there are many valid uses for 2wd. YOU may need 4wd, but not everyone does. Yet a truck is still a valuable commodity to them.

For a normal user, Toyota will last longer Than any other truck, that is why people buy Toyota. In your case, you are already planning on to destroying the truck, so none sense in buying something people buy to last to destroy it. At least in my case, I won't by Banana Republic to get down the truck, I would buy some Old Navy to destroy them.

I had the same (somewhat) frustration when looking for my Tacoma. You just have to be patient and search high and low. I had every car buying site, including craigslist, on auto notification whenever a truck came up for sale with my search criteria. Just be picky, take your time, exhaust all search options, and the "Right" truck will eventually surface. I looked for about 6 months before I found a deal (or what I thought was a deal). Anyways, good luck with your search and hopefully you can find what you are looking for!

I like it. I have never (knock wood) needed a clutch on anything I own so far.

In terms of cash: I'm buying a house so I can't use cash right now since I need my reserve for that. Unfortunately the credit union I'm financing through has no means of handing cash to a seller who brings in a title, so I'm stuck with nothing or a dealer.

I had to wait for the right deal to pop up. 130k mile 05' DCLB TRD one owner for 14k is hard to find in the area. This truck regularly brings 17-20k on the lots around here. Insane. SO I understand your frustration with prices. But still, no need to come shit all over these trucks in a forum full of them. You're eating a ham sammich in the middle of a pack of hogs. It will never ever end well.

Heres my question. Why do you trash your vehicles?
Sounds like a personal maturity problem rather than a Toyota problem.

It's your fault you can't have nice things.

I bought mine which was in the same price range as silverados that I was looking at. I found a tacoma that was 4 years newer and the same price as a nice silverado, but it had 20k more miles. I chose the tacoma because of the following reasons.

I do not need a V8, a V6 is perfect for me (better gas?)

    Silverados feel like boats.

It is easier to park and drive the tacoma

Out of all the reviews I have read, it looks like tacoma is more reliable/has less issues then silverado

The shifter is in the middle like my car, not by the steering wheel

Price wise, they were both in the same ball park

I feel driving offroad will be easier in the smaller tacoma

    OP, you're ridiculous.

First all, you can definitely find a low mileage (<70k) 2nd gen Tacoma 6MT. Sport being the cheaper and more available model, but still an OR for 22k. I can post you up a 2011 with 53(?)k 6MT OR in that beautiful metallic grey. You can easily find 2nd gens in your budget.

Secondly, stop blaming millennials. As a millennial, blaming millennials is both immature, insulting, and just ignorant. I only buy used and any person who is good with their finances doesnt buy new, or saves to buy it cash. You want to know why they're overvalued? Because of past generations saying they are bulletproof, unstoppable, etc. So now of course Toyota can just ride on the reputation that was given to them and hike up the price and say "want a car that is bulletproof, unstoppable and will be on the road 20 years later? Pay for it". So if you want to blame a generation, blame yourself. Every generation has that subset of yuppies and want to be yuppies who spend their money on stupid shit.

Third, you say these trucks havn't held up like other brands? Then go buy that other brand. That being said, why are you beating the shit out of your vehicles to the point where resale value is nullified?

Fourth: Resale is ridiculous, but that is part to do with the fact that the 1st and 2nd gens fully lived up to the Toyota hype, they are unstoppable. Now factor in the fact that the 3rd gens are being seen as the model that fell short and costed way too much, and the 2nd gens are about to go for much more.

Fifth: If you think Tacoma prices are ridiculous, go look at FJ's.

Lastly, if you want a beater, go buy a pre tacoma, or 1st gen.

As someone who has been looking to buy a Tacoma again since 2008, I know how you feel, but quality costs, so stop your bitching.

Sounds like you should buy a dedicated wheeler if you're beating your truck enough to make it 'wear out' in 3 years but only spend 20% of your time off-road.

Or, buy a truck, build it properly, and learn to drive with a little more finesse.

You admit you beat the crap out of a truck. You complain about your resale vs the resale of others you are looking to buy from. Shouldn't a vehicle that has been maintained be worth a high value vs yours that has been abused and not maintained? Simple math.

As many have said if you can't afford it you can't afford it. That includes spending on maintenance and upkeep. From your thread it seems you are at the tight end of affording the truck you want and can't afford to maintain it properly or don't understand the need to do it regularly. My racebikes are maintained to a much higher more frequent level than my street bikes due to the added abuse they endure. Mile vs mile the racebike costs much more to maintain, have more frequent oil changes, have clutches replaced more often. Tires last a weekend vs a season.

Pay to play or don't play at all. Set aside money from each paycheck so you can afford maintenance. Write out a budget. Maybe you need to go wheeling or to the bar less often so there is money to replace parts or put towards the next truck.

Just what exactly do you do your trucks that makes them scrap metal in 5 years? That's not 'regular' off-road. And no other truck, and I literally mean NO truck will last you, regardless of brand name, if you just abuse the hell out of it.
I mean, do purposely crash it into buildings or into lakes? Are you just ignoring maintenance?
Or are you like the guys in that YouTube video everyone was posting here last week, you know the one where they drove a Tacoma with aired up tires down a washboard at full speed for 30 miles then pointed out the shocks were leaking?
If all you like to do is the push the skinny pedal to the floor offroad, maybe you should just get yourself a pit crew. That way you can abuse the thing all day long then hand it over to the mechanics to get it ready for the next drive.

I love how excited Tacoma fans get when reliability is questioned. As a second gen owner I love the truck but it definitely isn't as bullet proof as some of you make it seem. At 30k I've spent several k fixing issues Toyota created with poor design. The front hubs fail quickly once any extra weight or lift is installed, the tolerances on the front differential are laughable so you need the ECGS bearing replacement at some point, the AC condenser drips right onto a divot in the frame so that has to be relocated, and I could go on and on but you get my point. Is the Tacoma a great little truck? Absolutely. However no one should kid themselves. It has a pile of flaws and failure points that I never have had to address on my F150 with heavy tires and a lift kit.

I feel like your eventually going to run into issues with anything you decide to mod. you cant heavily mod a vehicle and expect it to have the same reliability as stock. people like to skip over the fact that modding anything puts stress on your vehicle then they bitch and whine when something breaks.

I'm not bitching at all, just simply pointing out that the concept that the newer Tacomas are bulletproof is far fetched at best. I accept that anything worked hard or modified won't last as long without TLC but after owning a Tacoma my preconceptions about any superiority over competing brands is gone. I love my Taco but she's needed a pile of parts for a young truck no matter how you look at it.

I don't understand how the OP has "trashed" 3 Tacomas living in Florida. There are no mountains there, hell there probably aren't even any rocks
