yes a flat spin in an F-14 can and did screw up the ejection sequence.

 

damn canopy would bobble for a extra couple hundredths of a second because of the aerodynamics of the aircraft and a flat spin.

The RF4c model was my first air frame too, a pig if there ever was one lol they were 3 or 4 years older then I at the time ! 20. They had Martin Baker's in them too if our egress folks were to be believed we used to joke about write the plane up for an in flight ops ck of Martin Bakers to get rid of a broke D.... Plane lol

We had an aeronautical engineer with us for a major repair to a wing. We asked him one night in the ready room to settle the pool bets over if and how it could happen . He did a whole lot of looking stuff up and other crap on paper for an hour or so . Yep can happen in the right conditions and right canopy ejection type etc . Woot I win ..lol well me and 3 other guys who all guessed the same as I did ; about wind going over the fuselage vs coming straight on.

We had an F4c flat spin at BAFB Austin,Tx the pilot was able to pull it out via flaps down, speed brakes down , gear down and yanking the tail chute . Plane made it back it was odd not a lot of damage but odd damage. Horizontal stab inbrd corners skin peeled aft to fwd, same for inbrd wing TE at wing fold , vertical stab last 18 inches of fin cap snapped off. Really wild stuff I would have bet it would have become a lawn ornament in a flat spin lol F4 glide ratio 2:1 .

Oh I have probably a hundred or so lots of doubles those are all from Bergstrom in Austin Tx Sylvester was the 45 Amu training amu we trained pilots from Germany and some other places there and in the 62nd amu.

F4 Phantoms are my favorite fighter aircraft , while stationed at MCAS El Toro in the early 80's I watched them fly 24/7 . One of the many squadrons there was VMFA 214 Black Sheep . This Squadron made famous by Colonel Gregory " Pappy" Boyington
