Couldn't agree more. I believe the reason we see so many 20 year old Tacomas on the road versus Ford Rangers and Frontiers is because they are _pretty trucks_ and fun to drive. Because of this people feel more invested in them and are willing to hang on to them and fix them. In my experience my Tacomas have had as many mechanical issues as any car I've owned...

I think the myth of indestructibility is a circular argument... we believe they are durable so we just overlook the repairs and things we replace on them as "flukes"...

I drove an old pontiac bonneville into a 3 foot puddle one time, stalled it, it filled with water and I managed to barely get it started and drive it out. engine was completely flooded and misfiring. I just kept driving it and it kept running normally after a bit. I also jumped it off some small hills before I got rid of it... if it had been a Hilux on Top Gear they would say "INDESTRUCTIBLE!"... hahaha...

ohhh... you have to know me. I've been "that guy" since I was a kid... you know, the one who finds a way to break everything with/without meaning to. In this case fast driving through open fields, over everything I can find, and up and down forest roads (with some hills)... high speed donuts etc...

I bought a BMW dual sport motorcycle before and actually rode it like a dirtbike instead of the asphalt queen others treat them like. When I took it into the dealership one time for warranty service the mechanics were standing around looking at it when I went to pick it up and one of them said "shit... you really actually take this thing off road, and you actually run low tire pressure for off-roading".

I use everything I own until it grinds to dust and then move on.

You might not mean to, but everything you described will cause premature wear on any vehicle.

Ram your truck head on into a brick wall and expect it to not break?

You joke but I've seen a car hit a 12 foot gator on a country road at night one time, looked like someone picked it up and threw the car, tail lights went up 2 feet.

Of course! I drive everything I own "Like I stole it"... hence my dilemma of why to buy Tacoma if I never get re-sale out of it and they are pricing high expecting people to pay it due to resale value.

Nope, that's inviting catastrophic failure, I just run things on the far end of their operating parameters more often than many. :)

Hahaha! there could be landmines on my commute; it only makes good economic sense. I'd be throwing money away NOT to buy one!

engines are solid as a brick. the auto tranny not so much. the manual tranny was a brick shithouse. I had a 4.0 auto and it was a monster. only downfall is the tranny

Did they make many manuals? Is that why there aren't that many 20 year old ones running around now?

Also, since I know nothing about auto transmissions in general, why do auto transmissions have a heat exchanger but manuals don't?

Diffs are weak on the low end models and the front end design sucks unless you want to chop it up to swap to coils. I had a 2007 auto as well.

The fluid in an auto is a working fluid, it transfers power hydraulically and therefore gets hot. The fluid in a manual is just a lubricant and doesn't get nearly as warm for that reason.

After reading all of this there seems to be a lot of hate on tacomas for this being a Tacoma enthusiast forum. As for the op breaking 3 tacomas, clearly this is an operator error. Top gear couldn't even kill a Toyota pickup truck. No idea how you managed to break 3. I feel bad for your truck. The same kind of bad I feel when I see a fat bastard on a 50cc moped. Almost feel like I need to rescue the poor little machine.
