I remember falling in that hole. "Where the hell did that come from?" Totally overlooked that and kept driving.

That's because I'm slowly prepping for an epic solo overlanding trip in the distant future. So my focus has shifted from hard core wheeling truck mods to self sufficiency in recovery, truck repair and safety.

My recovery gear collection is quite comprehensive. I think I want to get a third snatch block for more complex angle recoveries, an additional winch line dampener, and maybe a spare synthetic winch line. And the tools and knowledge to splice/repair a synthetic line. I have about a dozen steel shackles I've collected over the years, and have recently added a couple of soft shackles. I think I've turned into a soft shackle convert, so I might add a couple more of those heavy duty soft shackles to my collection.

I know that I have more to do and learn in the world of vehicle trail repairs. Aside from an overly comprehensive medley of tools and the small, yet very important truck parts and materials (emergency valve stems, valve cores, zip ties, duct tape, wire, etc) I now carry the standard spare CV axle (lesson from @stairgod and many others) and DS (lesson from @HolyHandGrenade and @Sub-Zero) I've added front hard brake lines (lesson from @mach1man001 ) and a spare wheel bearing (lesson from @Nimble9.) I think the key to all my trail spares is that I've been taking the time to learn how to remove and install these parts as I add them to my carry load.

My personal health and safety and those around me is most important to me. If you've been hanging around me while we're wheeling or performing a recovery, you'll see that I quickly take charge of a situation where I believe safety is a concern. I will naturally bark out orders to people to stay clear, be careful, stay alert, etc. I will engage those around me to determine best and safest approach to a recovery. A comprehensive emergency trauma/first aid kit is always in the truck. I carry a fresh emergency asthma inhaler for those that may have asthma related breathing challenges and fresh EpiPens for those with severe allergic reactions. I am seriously considering a portable automatic defibrillator. Although I don't have a heart condition, there may be peeps around me that may have unexpected issues. Two fire extinguishers are standard.

Getting my Ham license is what I really need to do. Comms out in the middle of nowhere is vital. CB is only line of sight, cell phone towers are few and far between in the true outback. I think I'll start studying this weekend.

Becareful with the AED... i want to say youre in some sort of medical profession but not anyone can just administer an AED anymore. Even us Coasties can't apply an AED anymore unless in the health services technician field

Really? We can. We have a couple AEDs around here that are meant for anyone to use and are super simple. Granted everyone is CPR certified, but that's not hard to do.

EDIT: I'm talking about something like this, but we have a nicer, more expensive version.

Right, which is why I was saying that if Subway wanted one, he could safely administer one to someone in need and doesn't necessarily have to be in the medical field.

An automated defibrillator like the Phillips HeartStart Home Defibrillator is very easy to use and will give clear voice directions. Even so, some basic training in it use would be important.

At work, we have two or three commercial versions (AKA more expensive) located on each floor. There are key operators that are trained to use these. But any person can use it in an emergency.

Thanks @loosnut for the freebie mechanics gloves you were handing out on Friday!!!!

Used them all weekend while working on my truck. Also used them Saturday 'n Sunday to protect my delicate hands while stacking rocks.

You are the reason I ordered a set of Colby valves for my trip out west, and @HolyHandGrenade is the reason why I ordered a valve stem tool with more valve stems. Don't want the easy fixes be the reason you are stuck on a trail somewhere.

My coworker was at a soccer game recently where someone's Dad's heart stopped flat out. Luckily an off duty cop was at the game and had it in his car. Saved the guys life but because it wasn't readily available he got some brain damage.

Hang tight until before your big trip. The current version might be outdated by the brand new version and the prices might drop.
