A direct connection will always (at least with present technology) be better than a wireless connection. If the media in question isn't top quality the BT may hide some of the imperfections.
That said, the BT connection is solid enough that on the daily drive I use the BT and leave the phone in my pocket.

Oh and count me as a JBL supporter. I had a full Focal setup in my Xterra and loved it tremendously, the JBL isn't on the same level, but it is 80% of it, factory installed and much cheaper! Now if Toyota would do a factory Focal option...

For 2018, looks like you can get Cement on the Off Road and add the Premium package which includes JBL, Sunroof, and Leather seats. Tech package is separate now, but you should probably wait for the '18

I guess the younger folks who are used to listening to music from a earphone or 1/4 inch speaker on the bottom of their phone, the JBL isn't great. It's the BEST you're going to get from the factory in a Tacoma but it's better than average at best. My stock premium 6 disc stereo in my F-250 blows away the JBL in my 15 year newer Tacoma. But then I grew up in the late seventies where loud, great sounding music was the norm and a must. But I still paid extra for it in my Tacoma and it does the job pretty good. Would I buy it again, yes!

Hate to say it but I was guessing late 40's, early 50's. More my age.
