Choosing appropriate WDH

Gang,

Looking for some feedback on acquiring the most appropriate wdh for my setup. Please refrain from the all the extra fluff commentary... I've read the towing bible & more.

16 TRD OR DCLB AT:
6400# towing capacity
640# tongue weight
1175# payload

2018 Rockwood Travel Trailer (single axle):
Dry: 3126#
(Available) Cargo: 752#
GVWR: 3878#

Me, wifey, dog + etc prob around 500# in truck; don't expect more than 3600-3700# loaded TT

Will see approx 200# extra tongue with 2 lp tanks, battery & front bike rack w/2 sleds (or bikes in truck, so payload same) Currently thinking 800/10,000 rated wdh. Suspect will move to 1/2 ton full size truck within 1-2 yrs so would like compatible but would rather not sacrifice too much ride handling?

ps. Don't have the means for real deal scales near me

Pro series, I have one hitch bar for my Tacoma and one for my 3/4 ton Silverado. You can enter change the head kit both hitch bars. The smaller hitch bar is good for 10k and the larger one is good for 12k. That set up is good for a lifetime for most. Some may call it overkill for what your towing but if you buy a good WD hitch you can use it for any trailer set up. I use mine on a multiple MC trailer, 4k Camper and a 4800 lb boat. The smaller hitch bar is what you will need for your truck, the pro series site will confirm it. I always use a WD hitch anytime I get close to 50percent of the legal tow weight for the vehicle just for the additional braking power, handling and ride stabilization. Hope some of this helps I'm sure many will tell you you don't need it or a brake controller but if you have ever had a trailer go squirrelly or need to stop fast it's worth the price.

 

I just bought a camper very similar in weights to yours. I bought this WDH; nearly the same price as what you're looking at but it's rated for a bit more weight and comes with sway control.

I have the same WD hitch (The 1000 LB version), it hauls my trailer nicely.

 

My TT is 3750 dry. I probably push 5k- 5500 when all is said and done. WDH is a 10-12,000 system depending on the hole used and I needed a larger drop shack due to my lift, but I'm good with the Overkill set-up.

Obviously the Curt is overkill, but for the price I don't see why not. Other than it will probably be stiff towing the TT (the current one is around 3k when it's all said and done, but in the near future it will be traded for one around 4500lbs overall) is there any major downfall to having one that is rated too high?
