Key Stuck in Ignition

So i have a 1998, 5 Speed Toyota Tacoma. I can put the key in the ignition and start my truck and turn it to the ACC and everything fine but i can't get the key to come out of the ignition. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

 

Your ignition cylinder tumbler is worn out and needs to be replaced. I believe you need to get access to the sides of the cylinder to push in a little tab that will allow the whole thing to slide out.

No, use a silicone spray instead. WD40 is good for rusted bolts not for lubrication. After some time WD40 turns into sticky goo making things worse for longer run.
In places like locks silicone spray is great. While fresh sprayed it flushes dirt and old oil, when dries it leaves a residue that is non sticky and repels watter.

 

This happens to me when I use my wal-mart cut spare key. Is your steering wheel locked too? When I accidentally lock the steering wheel it also locks the key in the ignition. What you can do is jiggle the steering wheel or push it to one side simultaneously when trying to turn the key and the ignition tumbler will unlock.

I frequently had this issue in the winter. My lock mechanism was very sensitive to the steering wheel position even though the ignition switch was in the "off" position.

I am sure you have already tried, but in case you haven't...you may try rocking the wheel lightly against its stops as you wiggle the key.

Get a new ignition switch. They are relatively easy to replace yourself, but keep in mind you will have a different key for the door and ignition unless you are somehow able to get one keyed alike. I went with a non-OEM replacement and it has worked very well since installation.

 

Happened to my 98. You can take your ignition apart and remove some tumblers in there. If you are in an area prone to high crime don't do that. Worked for mine. Cheap fix.

 

Have you been using a Toyota key or a HD/Walmart replacement? The cheap replacement keys are prone to getting stuck like this.

 

Use this on any and all locks.....

 

If your truck is an automatic the issue is in the shift lock release cable attached to your ignition lock

 

Do not use graphite in your locks. It is worse than you can imagine if you do.

 

I just replaced the ignition on my 2000 4runner, fairly cheap replacement, maybe $60. The down side I now have 2 keys. You have to be able to move to the acc position to get the old one out. Replace the ignition switch now before it’s too late.
