This is my first post on this forum, but I've been active on other forums in the past and lurking here for quite some time. I'm going to try to be more active here, considering I have a Tacoma now. I've had quite a few Toyota trucks in the past, and I recently acquired a brand-new one just a few months ago. Here's to hoping I can add something to this mad house that is TacomaWorld.

In December 2016 (I know, super late to the party) I bought a new 2017 Tacoma TRD Off-Road, DCSB, 4WD, 6MT, with tech package/moonroof in Inferno...a real unicorn! In the 8 months I've owned it, I have done a lot of mods to it, including a lift, tires, wheels, armor, exhaust, and some LED lighting. I'll be sure to do a build thread in the future once it's done (or check it out on Instagram for updates as I go along). This truck really is turning out to be amazing, maybe my favorite Toyota truck yet (even if it is slow...they all are).

Anyways, over this last weekend, I noticed something quite strange. The digital speedometer displayed on the center of the dash cluster will NOT display 81 mph. The one I am talking about is in between the speedo and tach, on the color display. It will display every other number individually, but not 81. (that is, 78, 79, 80, 82, 83, 84)

Not that it affects operation in any way, just thought it was strange. I can confirm that I am going 81 actual miles per hour using GPS, but the speedometer displays 80. When my GPS says 82 mph, the speedometer says 82 mph.

Who else out there has the same thing happening? Or is it just me? There's a poll. DO IT. I need data! (except be responsible when going 81...) I'm wondering if it is a problem with my individual truck, or a programming issue right from Toyota.

Welcome to the madness. May I ask, where are you that you need/can go 80+mph?

Here in Northern New England...where the speed limit says 65-70 and the average speed of traffic is easily over 80. You're just going with the flow.

Literally anywhere on Texas highways. We even have some 85mph speed limits. Which is about 90-95 with the "flow" of traffic.

I think I have only had mine around 80 or so once when I passed some tractor trailers right before an exit but i did not pay attention to see if it skipped any numbers.

I actually have a couple videos of my truck doing exactly this during a jaunt from southern MA to northern NJ in early July. The first one is when the display forgets that 81 is an actual number. The second video taken 2 hours later without stopping, turning the truck off, or even getting off of the highway shows it displaying the 81mpg figure. Before anyone says that it started displaying 81mph because I was in 5th gear in the second video, it did it in 6th too. I didn't bother getting that on video.

The only weird thing I noticed on mine was the miles till empty number, it stopped at something like 332 and stayed there for about 30 miles without changing.

My miles till empty used to say 385 every time I filled up now it says 381 no matter how much I put In or where i go. Between 81mph not displaying and 381 miles till empty from a fill up ,all I have to say first world problems!

This is because it's a live calculation. If you fill up at a very low MPG, and then drive very economically, that can happen. It guessed 332 miles from a lower fuel economy, and then suddenly you drove much more economically so your range increased as you were driving. Get better fuel mileage, get more range!

It actually started at 364 as always and worked itself down to 332 and stopped, I was driving on my normal routes with no changes, went into town and made several stops.

the poll options are conflicting. the comments appended to the answers are opposite what they should be if answering the question. i'm pretty sure mine shows 81 just fine but i'll test it this afternoon on the way home.

    does your speedo show 81?

    Yes, you're crazy.
    or
    No, never noticed until now.

    So the plot thickens...

I recently noticed my truck won't show 80 km/h (set to Canada mode). Every other number seems fine but passing through 80, it'll jump from 79 to 81 and same thing going down. But the weird part is, if I stop and turn the truck off and back on, it'll show 80 km/h the first few times I go through it, then after a few minutes it's back to glitching. Any thoughts?

I've had mine upwards of 100MPH to do a quik PASS on 295 in Maine.... speed limit is 70MPH in certain areas normal traffic flow is going 75-80mph.. and when passing some jackass that keeps swerving into my lane.. I dont hesitat to pass with a quickness...
