Has anyone done this before? I was told it can be as simple as just changing the the cam gears? Doesn't sound right to me? I have a 2006, I'm going to have to swap the engine, it would be nice to put an engine only a couple years old. Any input welcome.

Especially from someone who has done the mod.

    Thanks guys!

Dual VVT-I was introduced into the 4Runners and FJC's in 2010 while the Tacoma retained the original VVT-I 1GR. Not sure about compatibility

Sorry about that, then what makes 2012+ 1GR's not compatible with 2011- 1GR's?

Why do you have to swap the engine?

Nothing, really. 2012+ got some additional air injection smog stuff in the headers. Should be able to bolt up a 2012+ 1gr to everything in 2005-2011

I know they bolt up, but they are not compatible. I always assumed because they switched to dual VVT-I. A friend with a shop said someone brought in a 2007 Tacoma to the shop next to his that would not run right. The person had put an engine from a 2012 Tacoma in it. He said the shop next door fixed it by putting cam gears on it from a 2005-2010 engine???

You don't want a 2012 engine....look up the secondary air injection issues

So, there is extra sensors, etc that mess with ecu? Is that the compatibility issue?

If you're going through the trouble of dropping in a new engine, deleting the smog pump in a 2012 to 2015 4.0 should be a non-issue.

The dual vvt-I never made it to the 2nd gen Tacoma so my guess is the only issue you'd have would be with sensors or the ECU.

Does anyone know if there is any advantage in getting a 1GR-FE from an FJ made in Japan (VIN starts with J) vs a 1GR-FE from a Tacoma made in US?

    Thanks for the help guys!

BTW I thought I found a good engine, low miles from an FJ, pulled the valve cover.... :(

Sludge city, looked like the previous owner belonged to the Church of I Do Not Change Oil! LOL!

Air injection issues were fixed in 2013, it was only 2012. You can definitely use a newer Taco engine but you might need the ECU and engine harness from it as well.

You can also bolt in the V8 from a 4Runner, uses same auto transmission just need the bellhousing from the 2uzfe. I'd seriously consider that if I were in your shoes.
