Anyone have any insight on what the difference between the UV-5R and the BF-F9? I can read a spec sheet but what is the practical benifit of one over the other and is it worth the $12 difference? They are showing to be on sale right now so it would be a good time snag one.

The only real difference is that:
    1) the UV-5R is a 4W radio (1W, 4W... selectable)
    2) the BF-F9 is an 8W radio (1W, 4W, 8W... selectable)

To have that extra 4W will come in handy as it is that much better overall. The more wattage output, the better you can reach further out. Other than that, I really don't see much of any difference really? Maybe some extra features, but nothing significant enough to where it's going to make an extreme difference... that I can see. :notsure: But, again, that extra 4W is a PLUS for sure!!! Also, they're both still dual band radios anyways, which is a PLUS in MANY ways!!!

    NOTE:
    - I would get the 8W radio over the 4W

    - I would get an aftermarket antenna (btw, don't throw away the stock antenna... that way you have some sort of back-up antenna if ever needed). With an aftermarket antenna, like the Nagoya NA-771, you typically get better TX (transmit) efficiency over the stock antenna and better gain (RX) of weak signals.

    - I would get an extended battery pack because using 8W is going to kill your "smaller" battery pack quicker... OR... you can just use the 4W setting until you possibly need the 8W to conserve battery power, which is typically what you would want to do anyways.

    - I would get a handheld MIC so that it is overall easier with the only exception, don't just lay your radio down next to you as you ALWAYS want you antenna pointing upwards as well as close to the outside environment as much as possible (i.e. next to a window for example).

I want to eventually get an 8W radio myself... when I can afford it!!! :annoyed::frusty::facepalm:

So, in conclusion, is it worth the extra $12, in my humble opinion, yes it is!!!

Hey Randy, how do I check to see if my UV-5R is in the 1watt or 4watt power mode? And how do I change that?

Thank you oh mighty radio guru

    Press "MENU"

Press "Up/Down Arrows" until you see something like "TX HIGH/LOW"

    Press "MENU" again

    Press "Up/Down Arrows" accordingly

Press "MENU" and listen for "Confirmed"

Press "EXIT" and/or just wait for the "MENU screen time out" and it will go back to its homescreen

    Yes! Thank you!

We were on the subject and I don't bring the instructions with me everywhere I go. My radio however is in my truck so I can go futz with it on my break.

We all need radio school from Randy. All pay like 25 bucks and he might be able to pay some bills.

For handhelds, I would leave it at the lower wattage setting to prolong batt life!!! Only go to the higher setting if you need to reach out about a mile or just over. But, 1W is more than strong enough to reach someone that is very near you, such as in a caravan group.
