I believe this is the way I'm going to go.

 

I can confirm this that you do not have to have cellular service for those track.
I don't know for sure if the latest generations have changed, but older generation iPads(2 and 3) had to be cellular capable in order to have built in gps, but you do not have to have a cellular subscription. By being cellular enabled it simply added the additional gps hardware to the device.

 

I have an older iPad (pretty sure 2). Can you walk me, an idiot, through to see its compatibility and capabilities?

 

If it is cellular capable there will be a SIM card slot/tray with a tiny hole next to it on the top left corner in portrait mode.

Edit: also in Settings, right below Bluetooth you should see an option for Cellular Data that will say No SIM if there is no SIM card installed. It's been a while since I messed with a WiFi only so I can't recall if that entry is still displayed on those.

 

Alright, Seems like I should finally get a Tablet to run some map options this Black Friday (Seeing as there are deals on all of them).

Mine was an Android I can look up which one later. But it was 8".

 

I'm not tech savvy but I was thinking about getting one of the Samsungs that are on sale this week. Says it has GPS built in.
"Galaxy Tab A" 8 inch for $129.99.

 

I use a Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition. I love the large screen for mapping purposes, but you have to keep the weight in mind with whatever mounting solution you plan to use.

 

Samsung Tab S2 here. Key thing is fast processor for loading and updating of the maps. Also expandable memory for map storage.

I don't recall what I paid, but I picked mine up last year during BF from B&H photo. I also added a 64gb card to store all data.

 

not sure if you can grab a cyber monday deal still but i grabbed a cheap one that would do what i needed a few years back. the display is not great but it has expandable memory and is able to run mapping and aprs stuff. it wont download facebook or lots of other apps now are no longer optimized for it but the ones i use most are...

 

I have been using a Samsung Tab 4 7" for outback navigation for nearly 4 years now without any issues. Got it open box for less than a 100 bucks at the time. You should check out Best Buy in the open box section to see what's available.

From what I can tell it's based on the same GIS data from the feds that is mentioned in this thread and elsewhere. Does cover *all* trails, not just motorized.

Have been introduced to a new navigation app (at least I don't think it's been mentioned here yet). The people I heard about it from were mostly addressing the hunting utility, which is the company's primary focus, but they apparently have an off-road app as well: https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad-app Haven't done anything with it yet, but I'm about to figure out (or try) how to get shapes or points loaded into it. Anyone else hear of or use it (even the hunting version)?

 

I've been using the paid version for hunting and fishing for a few years. It's sometimes slow to refresh and doesn't always keep up very well at driving speeds even when the offline tiles have been downloaded but that's a minor bitch. Great app worth the money IMO.

 

Ok, Time for my Annual should I update from Paper Maps or not.

Is this overkill, was thinking dual use instead of just a tablet for navigation. Costco Deal from Today.

 

What would you use it for when not using it as a tablet for navigation? Even as a computer that is overkill for most programs unless you’re doing heavy video editing or something else CPU intensive.

 

I like to check out NASA's calculations and point out all their errors.

Heck, I just looked at the RAM & HD capacity and said, that should work... Guess you're saying it's more than required to run some Maps/ APRS.

 

I’ve found iPad mini and smaller tablets to be easier to work with on trails. Easier to mount and pack as opposed to a larger full size laptop/tablet. Much more cost effective as well.
