I went with the 14" springs in 650 spring rates on the Kings from 13" springs on the Foxes.

Fire roads and offroad parks mainly, crawling in some of the parks. I should have added that my up travel is now limited by my fender wells and stock battery location with 35s lol. Would have had to do something like this regardless. Wouldn't say it's too limiting though, maybe it would be for faster stuff. I usually air it out every other trip or so and it beats up the body before trashing the shocks.

There are a lot of offroaders running small top plate spacers, we're just not supposed to talk about it :anonymous:

    Heres a cool story bros...

I have the Fox 2.5 w/o RR which I got from headstrong off-road. The top hat was flipped the opposite way as those with the resi. The collars we're cranked to 27 threads showing. IMO that's a lot of preload. I removed the coilovers and flipped the top hat because thats how it's configured with those that have reservoirs anyway. I turned the collar so that only 16 threads we're showing figuring it would reduce the preload. The truck now sits level and rides much better. I may crank them down more because I'd like the front to sit a little bit lower than the rear.

This was with 14 threads showing on driver's side. I lowered them another 2 full rotations. Front is now 1/2" lower than rear. Sits at about 23 1/2" hub to fender while rear is at 24 1/8".

Interesting. Is that recommended by Fox? I'd love to eliminate some preload if this is safe to do. Currently at 32 threads for 3" over stock.

@Lord Helmet and @ktmslade thanks for all of the information. Even though you both provided different opinions, this helps! I will say that yes it's a lot of preload but honestly the ride is great. That's no BS. I am actually learning more about how coilovers work after I had a mechanic install them. They've been on my truck at that setting since last November and the ride is still pretty good. The rear is a bit stiff with the Icon AAL and and Fox 116's but I just expected that anyway. @nm4553 can you go into a bit more detail on how you flipped the top hat on your 2.5's? Was it hard to do? I may consider that.

I haven't been able to find definite answers. It looks like I may have a newer style coilover without the additional lockring. I can't see any glaring issues other than possibly topping out the shock at full stuff, but I haven't done any testing. To me it seems like a wash between cranking up the preload (some to over 30 threads for 3" lift) and flipping the top hat. I'd rather have less preload for my daily driver.

Yes, it was kind of a pain but only because I had to remove the assembly from my truck anyway to adjust the preload. There is an 8mm allen bolt holding the tophat on. I used an impact to remove this (there is locktite on the bolt so it is difficult to remove with hand tools). Then just flip it and put the allen bolt back in using locktite if you want. You will find this increases overall length by 1" which results in +2" of lift up front, knowing this you can assume 8 threads = 1" lift and adjust accordingly based on your rear height measurement.

I got lucky and mine came out perfectly level. After the initial adjustment I was able to drop the front another 1/2" the next day without removing the coilover again. Some find it difficult to adjust these while on the truck. I completely removed the allen bolt from the collar and used a 5/8" punch tool to rotate the collar..

I had my 2.5's Fox's crank to around high 30 threads and it rode like a stagecoach. Lowered it 4-5 threads now and its a little better. Wish I would of gone with Kings

I'm planning to put my 265s back on and lowering everything for now. Just gonna store my 285s. Might not have the truck much longer anyway.

When you have to have your shocks rebuilt have fox add DSCs to your shocks. I bought the DSC Fox shocks and they're dope af. DSCs allow you to adjust shock dampening on your shocks for low and high speed impacts so you can get your cornering dialed in and then make sure you got the big bumps under control as well. Well worth the money for the upgrade too, especially if you already copped the reservoir shocks, shouldn't be that bad for you to upgrade

Flipping the hat on the Fox IFP shocks is the same as a spacer lift, and could result in broken ball joints. You might also want to make sure you aren't bottoming out on the shock instead of the frame bump stops. If you are, it'll wear the shock out very quickly. I think this is the real reason spacer lifts result in broken shocks.

The IFP shocks have longer bodies so the IFP has room to move. Notice the IFP Tacoma shocks have the cap outside the body and Remote Reservoir shocks have the cap inside the body.

When it comes to adding preload you do have to worry about running the spring coil bind.
Preload is how much you compress a spring to achieve ride height, your compress the spring the same amount regardless of it's length.
Spring length doesn't change your preload unless you change ride height.

Going to a longer spring will however allow you to add more preload before taking the spring coil bind. If your Tacoma is sagging due to added weight, longer AND higher rates springs are the correct choice.
