a yr ago I inherited my friends 2004 Tacoma and it had no manual. I'm a neophyte when it comes to trucks but this is what I know:
2004 tacoma, 2door, SR5, 6v, TRD Off Road prerunner with ex. cab.
it was stolen for 2nd time 6/23/17 and I just got it back last Saturday 8/5/17
I want to buy best possible anti-theft device/s to prevent it happening again. I'm willing to fork out bucks (only has 67,000 miles) ..please respond with advice in "Layman" terms... thank you
I love this truck so much.

There is no guaranteed anti theft device. A determined theif will be able to defeat ANY device.

It's been stolen twice, so you either have extremely back luck, or you park in a crappy area.

You could always install a hidden ignition cut off switch, or get an expensive alarm system that people just ignore anyway - I was workig on my old 4runner in an apparment complex parking lot and was having battery issues where my alarm kept going off. No one ever stopped me or called the cops on me...

Anywhoo... the thing to do is make your truck more of a pain in the ass to try and steal than the truck next to you... an ignition interupt may be the way to go, but the perp will only find that out after beakin the window and damaging your steering column.

Trade it in for one with a manual gearbox. It won't deter everyone but it's bound to throw off some folks.

I have the latest clifford alarm/remote start

Added a tilt and proximity sensors
    Also has 2 way remote

Proximity sensor- alarm goes off even if you leave your windows are down and someone pokes their head/hand inside your cabin

Tilt- if the truck gets tilted past a sertain degree

The best patt your remote lets you know when alarm is going off
And you can make it silent
Where only remote will buzz and not the vehicle

    Remote reaches very far aswell

Did you have that pedal lock on it when it was stolen? A thief can defeat pretty much any lock, but the more locks the merrier. My friend's car got stolen twice and then he put a steering wheel lock (all you gotta do is cut the steering wheel) and the pedal jack. His car didn't get stolen again, but there wasn't much left on it to steal - no radio, window trim, etc.

I just uninstalled a car alarm on my truck from the previous owner - man what a joke - all you need is a piece of wire and you can jump the starter disconnect and be on your way!

When is it getting stolen - at night or randomly?

The best one is still a chain looped around the steering wheel and brake pedal.

The problem being it is a pain to install when your in a hurry

Then it is nice to live where the keys get left in the ignition when the truck is parked

not sure how effective it is but when I have to leave my truck parked for a few days, I pull the 2 "IGN" fuses from the fuses in the cab. I think they could still steal the truck but who knows.

Yup. Im still working on it, i may make it still but it will sit higher than the plastic. Figure about 3.5" tall by the shifter area.

alarm can be effective if installed properly and horns loud enough to wake the farm.

edit: if the factory alarm from an 02 fits an 04 i'll sell that to you

The only device I'd think to need, given your probably not getting anywhere near my yard without my dogs going crazy, honestly I'd take the coils out of the car dosent cost a dime and I'd bet my left nut no one will put a coil in to steal your car

I just unplugged two of my coil packs. I doubt anyone will figure it out and I know it won't start. That's only if I'm letting my truck sit for days.

Don't flood your cylinders with fuel, disconnect the fuel relay fuse or ecu fuse.
