Hey guys. I have a 97 Tacoma and it came with the 1st gen SwayAway coil overs on when I bought it. Lucky me! They have been great but its time for a rebuild. I contacted AFE and was informed some of the parts are no longer available, however the seal rebuild kits are.

The problem im having is I work and live in a National Park. No even ground and I cant do anythink that involves loose oil, plus I have no work bench other than a dirt lot and my tail gate.

Im curious if I can purchase something like the Ranchp quicklift strut assembly or even the Monroe strut assemblys and put them in place for a few months until my season is over and I return home where I have a garage...and proper tools anf try a rebuild on the sway aways then.

The full extended length on the rancho and monroes is about 18.5" and on the truck between the bottom bolt and top of the mount is about 20.5".

Im not too familiar with the repurcussions of changing the ride that way, is there any reason I should not pursue this option? Does anyone have advice or other options? This is my only vehicle and I cant afford to have it out of operation for more than 3 days.

Thanks for any advice, and I apologize if I wasnt anle to find this topic on the site. I dont really have permanent access to the internet or phone here either I have to drive about 30 mins and use my ipod touch at a coffee shop.

I would recommend if you insist on switching out suspension, bilstein 5100's with some eibach coils. They're cheap, efficient, and quality. I cant recall which shop, but the majority of places you would order that combination from can assemble them prior to shipping them. They are also easy to replace, which could be done at an alignment shop. Which is my concern, the alignment. It would be off swapping suspension.

I can provide no real insight into the rebuild of the sway-away setup though. Good Luck!

I 2nd the 5100's if you really just want to downgrade...

But I'm having trouble understanding why you can't work with any loose oil. I understand you're in a NP, but I know there are facilities/maintenance shops you might be able to befriend someone to borrow some space, or just get a kiddie pool and do the work in that if you're concerned about spills.

But if you really can't do the work because of unavailable parts, IMO your best and cheapest (within reason, lol) option would be the pre-assembled 5100s mentioned above. You don't need a flat surface to install them, just jack up one side at a time and throw in the new shocks.
