that "resonator" is more or less just a pre muffler. a small glasspack muffler is all it really is. it isnt tuned to a specific resonance (although placement in the system will have some affect). it will help with both of those simply by making the exhaust quieter. the flowmaster uses a chamber and baffle to reflect certain frequencies so they cancel each other out.

i can post a comparison tomorrow of my personal truck with a flowmaster 40 resonated and non resonated.

That would be extremely helpful. I love the drone, but don't want it to sound harsh. It's a truck after all, not a super loud civic. Looking forward to your comparison

Thanks for the videos! I watched them numerous times with headphones.

They sounded very similar except it had a distinct high-pitch harshness without the resonator. Rumble and low end seemed very similar.

Is this your experience? Thanks again for the videos- they were very interesting

yup the fm40 gets very high pitch over 3500rpm especially on decel. thats where the resonator really helped.

Thank you very much for this. I've decided to keep the resonator because I wouldn't be able to accept that high pitch noise above 3500.

As much as i love the noise, it is a truck- and I like the deep truck-like noise. Thanks again

If you remove the resonator you might induce some rasp at certain RPM. Definatlly if you remove the CATS. Unless you have experience with the setup and running different combination of mufflers etc, its hard to say what youll get. WHen i had an exhaust shop i would tell my customers that i didnt gaurantee a certain sound. True duals with 40 and an x pipe sounds great though. :)

OH yeah, another thing to consider when seting up your exhaust is towing. If you tow often, chances are you may get a lot of drone at X rpm with X amount of additional load.

ive also ran true dual, x pipe, and h pipe with the fm40, resonated fm40, glasspacks, and whats currently on it glasspacks and fm40. all sound horrible. stick with a single exhaust

Its been so long since ive done exhaust. use to have a mandrel bender. Here is a G35 i did with true dual using 4 magnalow resonators and an x pipe. There is also a video of a 1150WHP jeep SRT8 i twin turboes. Good times, miss making ehxuast.

Thanks Yo_Hec! I am running cats. I wanted to remove them, but hesitated due to having my sensors start throwing codes.

I'm sure an x pipe would sound cool, but expensive!! I think i'll stick with the resonator to avoid rasp.

I really wanted my car to have a louder drone/rumble though :(

You can get O2 simulators to prevent the engine from throwing codes but I prefer to leave the cat in place :)

I looked into that, but couldn't figure out a straightforward one that works. URD makes one but it sounded as if you need stock piping with the stock sensor mounted
