ideally toyota should have a cam built into the rear view mirror.
the gopro mount doesn't have a power supply

I had a camera mounted to the go-pro mount, it was too far away to operate and check. I have a hardmount that attaches to rearview mirror that I opted for instead.

No.. I have a BlackVue DR650S 2CH dash cam and I just had to replace the windshield due to oncoming rock that did not miss the window... The BlackVue 650S has the front and rear camera and great quality video....

I just went out to B.C. and back... it recorded everything....even the rock that killed the windshield....!!

I got a new windshield WITHOUT that stupid mount.... (I did remove it from the old one...if anyone wants one..free)..!

The Blackvue sticks to the window in the center of the window...(or anywhere YOU want it)... if I put it in the Go Pro mount, it would be so far off-center as to make the video very "off center"...!

I mounted a Z-edge Plus. There is an earlier post with a photo of the aluminum block I machined and I had to epoxy the camera goose neck to the block. I think there are a lot of ways to pull it off depending on which dash cam you are looking at. I'm very happy with result.

yep, I have a z-edge Z3 mounted to mine. Works great. The Z3 is one of the few dashcams that use the screw mount attachment like a standard camera, so there are tons of adapters available for a gopro mount. The biggest pain I had when searching for a dashcam was how I was going to adapt it to the gopro base.

Ran a micro-usb wiring kit under the headliner with an add-a-fuse.. Looks very clean. I forget it's there most of the time.

    Cheers.

Where did you tap the power wire into? Pics of your install please. I've been looking at the Z-edge as well and want to hardwire it in so I do not lose my 12v.

With a 3D printer or some spare GoPro mounts and creativity, anything is possible!

I've used the GoPro mount for a radar detector (but that blocked the passenger side visor from going down all the way) and a dash cam in the past. I now have my dash cam stuck behind the mirror so I can't see it, and the GoPro mount unoccupied. Maybe I'll use it for a time lapse or something.

Power comes from the overhead console, a short few inches away. Auto dimming mirror, switches, and the moonroof all have switched/constant power/illumination feeds.

Does your GoPro charge while recording and plugged into the USB? When recording my GoPro battery drains even when plugged into the USB. Not sure if it's a GoPro or Toyota issue.

My GoPro will continue to charge when recording, but the charging process can be slow at times.
