Yup. My 89 K5 has 0 issues, I don't ever recall having to lube it. My 97 is the same. To me, the early failure of these goes back to either poor quality or poor design. Thin wire hinge, with tin folded over .. I can't imagine how they wouldn't be problematic. Keep it lubed and keep your fingers crossed I guess.

Quick spray with some white lithium grease at each 5000 mile oil change does wonders. No sign of rust after 6+ years.

Lubing the gas door hinge is just part of the truck maintenace. Just like lubing the door hinges, lubing the u-joints, door seals, engine oil, tranny fluid, diff fluid, transfer case fluid, spark plugs, air cleaner....

I usually just take a little 3in1 oil to the hinges like every 5 months. Used to be stiff as hell, but now it swings like a champ. Most of the tacos I see around here are missing that door.

The fuel door on my old Rav was bolted on so you could just replace the door If needed, the one we have seems riveted so I'd assume some work would be needed to replace Id though I might be wrong.

Yes, they are riveted on. Yes, they are a bit of a pain to replace. However, mine rusted and came off in my hand 1 day. I bought a new OEM door and had my local body shop buddies paint it to match. The issue with trying to drill out the rivets, is that the rivets have a hardened steel pin in them. If you pound on the pin hard enough to push them out, you will probably bend the bed side. I used a die grinder and ground away the rivet head all the way around the pin. After that the hinge bracket came right off. Then you can just tap the remains of the rivet on through. I put the new door on with stainless button head allen bolts and nonstainless nylok nuts. You can reach the back side by poking your arm through the cubby hole above the wheelwell.

Hose clamp idea worked like a charm. That's why I read these threads! After I took the pic, I added some fluid film to keep it from getting worse. IMG_1847.jpg

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Fixed mine too, after one hinge completely separated. Wanted to prevent it from falling down the side and scratching the body. Ordered the OEM part from Amazon, painted with rattle can, clear coated, and had a local shop rivet it back on. @Muddinfun is right, it is a pain to get out the rivets. I drilled mine out and was patient, but when you do that the hole is larger than original. You need larger rivets to get it back on. BTW not worth getting a rivet gun, the cheap ones cant handle big rivets. Just find a body shop. Total cost is about $70 for part paint and clear coat. Should be good for the next 130000 miles.

Mine is rusting out as well. I took the face plate off to pinch back the metal that was keeping it from opening all the way Don't know how that happened. Now it's rusting and at some point will snap. :(

The hinge rusting is the beginning of the rust infection. If you don't fix it the disease will spread to other parts of the truck. The only known fix is to use an oxy-acetylene torch to burn the whole area. Be sure to burn out at least a 2 ft. circle around the infected part.

    WTF!!!!....DAMN!!!!!!

After going through and reading all the post on this thread, specifically after seeing the above picture, I had to go out and take a couple of pictures of mine and believe me it's definitely not a pretty site, looks like crap! :poking:

How do you keep that inside gas door panel so clean?!

    Constant cleaning or ? :notsure:

What do you use to, not only get it clean but keeping it clean.

Because ever since I've had my 2008 Tacoma I've "never" cleaned the inside of the gas door.

I gave up on trying to keep it nice and clean. :goingcrazy:
Now, after seeing that picture above, heck I want mine looking nice and clean too! :annoyed:

Have the same issue. Need to have the hinge replaced. What is the part # of the hinge and where to order it? Or the only way is to have the whole gas door replaced?

The hinge is not a separate piece. It's all crimped together. On mine, the tab for the hinge that's part of the door, rusted away and the door came off in my hand. I bought a new door from Toyota and had a local body shop paint it to match. They have a really good painter and he matched the speedway blue perfectly. The only downside was driving around for a few days without a gas door. People would say, "did you know someone stole your gas door?"
