Yeah that is a lot of poles. I was referring to the ARQ 270 awning, this one:

Oh yeah, that one is super nice. I like that it's a lot shorter. Mine is 8 feet long on the side of my truck (which is a plus too because more shade) I can set mine up in about 2 minutes. The ARQ would be like 15 seconds. It's probably lighter too.

I did hear stability in higher winds is less than desirable, but I would fold it up in high winds I think. That's neither here nor there for now though since I have no place to mount it to yet. :p

I picked up a used OEM one at Toy Connection. I really lucked out with the wrecked Tacoma that they just got a hold of.

So far so good. The body roll around corners is drastically reduced. I've hit a few big bumps. You can feel the timbrens when you do. It's a bit harsh. I gotta take them off roading to decide if they're staying.

I did turn one of my stock bump stops into a part for my motorcycle mountain bike rack though.

I've always wanted an overhead console to mount a mobile ham radio into. After watching countless hours of Ronny Dahl and other Australian 4wd youtube shows where they have all this cool shit with over head consoles I finally decided something must be done.

I spent way to much time drooling over http://www.consoles.com.au/Toyota_79Series_dual_troof.htm and others like it.

Finally I said "Fuck it, I'm going to make this shit work" (I said this outloud).

I found this thing on Amazon...but it's for an FJ cruiser...https://www.amazon.com/ARB-BRCFJ-Ou...506137805&sr=1-1&keywords=fj+overhead+console

After a whole bunch of cutting and trimming and drilling and cursing I made it fit and I jammed a BTech UV 50x2 into. I added a couple USB ports because why not? It has a switch for each of the map lights, a switch for the rear facing "dome" lights and a switch to turn on all 4 lights. I converted that 4th switch to turn on my forward facing camera. It works really really well. I'm really happy about how it turned out.

I shoulda spent the money on upper control arms but now I can talk to the International Space Station if I really really wanted to.

Cool thread, just spent the evening going throughout it. Very entertaining and informative. A few questions, does the rear window inner tube cut down on road noise? And with the hole in the radiator fairing would it make sense to glue in a right-angle of abs to force the air to come through the radiator as much as it used to(abs can be heat formed to fit your cuts or to follow the radius of the battery corner)?
As a resource, I enjoy poking around Bateff salvage in Santa Rosa for whoknowswhat(they sell steel stock in 10' minimums) and was wondering what similar places were located elsewhere around the bay. Fwiw you can cut 1" x 1" x 1/8" mild steel tube with a circular saw and carbide blade(I used my makita 18V). That and a speed square made smooth, square cuts in seconds. I expect you can do the same with larger OD steel.

The innertube does a good job of keeping the road noise out. It's the dust that it's really good at keeping out. On that note I determined the inner tube doesn't work. As you go up and down in elevation...as we do here in CA...the tube expands and contracts with air pressure. Yesterday I loosened the camper shell clamps and slid the shell forward about 1/2 inch. I glued the two ends of some pipe insualtion together and shaved the sides down with a knife. I jammed that in there. It's quieter and won't expand and contract.
    IMG_2189.jpg
    IMG_2190.jpg

I spent way too much money on getting the tubes cut for the cross members for my fuel tank. I would have been better off and spent less money on buying a good used chop saw on craigslist. Down here I go to Allen Steel and Metal Supply in Redwood City for tubing and sheet metal. They're a little pricey but their service is good and fast.
I'd love to build my own flat bed pop up camper but I don't have the space. If I did that I'd have to find another source than Allen Steel...they cost a bit too much.

How long did it take you to knock out the tac weld mod? Ive been thinking about doing it.

It took me about an hour and a half. I did't tack weld it though. I drilled a small pilot hole and then stuck a self drilling self tapping screw into the hole and screwed it in with my drill until the head broke off the screw. I put 2 screws into it.

If you'd like a hand with it I'm available in January.

That's an awesome idea. You think it will still collapse in an accident though?

I've been going to Alan steel for all my metal needs as well, I haven't found another place in the Bay Area with that type of inventory. If you need some metal cut in the future, your than welcome to use my chop saw

Maybe...not really sure. They're 5/32 self drilling, self tapping screws and they broke off before penetrating very far. Originally I was going to use a roll pin that I bought at OSH. I lost it between OSH and my house and didn't feel like going back to get another

I love going there. I've stopped in just to look around if I happen to be in the area.

I'll probably take you up on the chop saw offer at some point.

I've had these frame plates under my bed for a few years. @Fuergrissa amd I welded them on a few weeks ago. Well...he welded Inised the angle grinder for clean up and prep.

I'm pretty happy with how they came out.
