Ok guys I have questions about long range shooting. I have a R700 in 300 Win Mag and was debating on doing work to it. Can someone explain the benefit of truing the receiver and what acuruzing is? Should I go with an aftermarket barrel or leave the stock one on? I don't reload so I'd be using factory ammo. Does it really matter if I go with an aftermarket stock too?

    What is the intended purpose?
    Hunting two or three times/year?
Setting up a long range precision gun for 1000+ yards?
Sending 100 or so rounds down range over the course of the day? (kinda goes along with that lr precision question)

The factory assembles the rifle within allowable tolerances. Do some factory guns shoot really well? Yes. Within an inch at 100yd? (Some folks will refer to this as 1 MOA accuracy) Sure, some do. Do some shoot less than an inch at 100yd? Yes, but those are tough to find. Will the gun maintain the minute of angle accuracy over multiple distances? Some factory guns do, however those can be tough to find as well, most will open up as the range gets extended.

By accurizing or blueprinting the rifle the gun smith will true the face of the action to make certain it square with the bore and the bolt face. When the new barrel gets threaded he is making certain the bore and the center of the action are aligned and concentric. By spending the extra time to do all this it removes some of the variables from the discussion. Remember when shooting over longer distances a 1/8deg of deviation at the gun can result in a miss 900yds out. By having the gun accurized that 1 MOA at 100yd should shrink to 1/2 and maintain that accuracy across multiple yardages.

The reason for changing out the stock would be for fit. If you're shooting all day you want some level of comfort because that will affect your accuracy. You want the gun to fit you, not trying to fit yourself to the gun. The other reason to change out the stock would be if it's one of those injection molded stocks. They suck, you don't want a stock that has all the rigidity of a wet rag. You want the stock and the action to be mated together as one like a newlywed couple that can't keep their hands off one another. If the action is floating around in the stock that will severely affect accuracy and consistency.

We were shooting a match and got there a day early to verify dope. One of the guys shooting with us put up a 6 round group of 3 1/2in at 1000yds with a 6.5 Creedmore. Considering 10" = 1 MOA at 1000yds this was well under 1/2 MOA accuracy. That was no factory gun.

Bottom pic is at 700 yards. First shot was the low one, made adjustment and the next 3 are grouped nicely together.

Laying prone in the bed of the Tacoma. Bipod and rear sand bag. Bipod is a Javilin bipod made by Spartan bipods in The UK. Carbon fiber and titanium. Rock solid up front and can't recall the rear bag.
Thank you! Furthest I've grouped a rifle to date. With the weather was a little cooler here in the desert of Oregon so I can get out again.

Smugly, you mean from 'inside' the cab? How did that happen?

As far as hunting off the top of my Tacoma cab, it is kinda of the perfect rest for my rifle.
Also one is up high and most body movements are hidden by the cab.
Besides, I was at the top of a hill and out to 200 yds the hungry feral pigs I was hunting were not jumpy.

We were in the back like you were set up on the roof of the cab shooting out over the front of the truck
on an Atlas bipod & squeeze bag. It was from the concussion coming off of the muzzle break, the 6.5 has like 2300 pounds of energy coming out of the front of the barrel

I saw you on here before asking about that, that’s going to be a tough order to Fill since the RPR is a purpose built rifle. Good luck
