I made a high clearance rear recently and figured I'd post up how I did it and what I would do different for next time.

    20170811_203254.jpg
    I used:
An angle grinder, sawzall, and a 110 welder for most (borrowed a 220 welder for the swing out)

4"x4"x1/4" for the main structure (next time id go 3/16")
I used 1/2"x4"x16" plate for the frame mounts (next time I'd use 1/4" angle iron to wrap around the bottom of the frame and take advantage of all the existing frame bolts)
Then 3/16" plate for the high clearance sides
And 2"x2"x3/16" tube for reinforcements and the swing out.
Comp4x4 heavy duty dual shear spindle.

Started by drilling the frame mounts and bolting them on.

Then I cut the main tube to size and added an angle at either side. Then I made the slots for the frame mounts to slide into the main tube. Making sure there was clearance for the tail gate to open.

    20170630_100330.jpg
Then I scored and whiskey bent the side wings into shape using a cardboard template.

I tacked everything together, cut the bed sides, then mocked it up on the truck.

    IMG_20170703_100924_645.jpg
After a couple minor adjustments, I tacked everything else up and added some tube from the frame mounts to the forward portion of the wings for strength.

    20170702_141501.jpg
Then I cut a hole for a hitch receiver. I cut a rectangle out of the bottom of the main tube to install the pin into the hitch. Then I started on the swing out.
    IMG_20170724_093934_037.jpg
I got the heavy duty dual shear spindle from comp4x4. I used this because the dual shear bracket should add a lot of strength, it has zerks to grease the bearings, the spindle is beefy, and it comes with a sleeve that gets welded, to keep the heat from destroying the integrity of the spindle itself.

I cut a hole with a hole saw and tacked the spindle in place and took measurements for the swing out.
    20170724_211647.jpg
I made it rectangle on the drivers side instead of angled so I could add accessories and a fold down table. Making sure that my tailgate would still open with the swing out on.

    20170726_210026.jpg
    IMG_20170727_013555_577.jpg
I added the tire plate at a 10* angle to give the tire moor clearance on approach and departure. Added some beefy gussets so I know the tire isn't going anywhere.

I used a latch that a buddy gave me from a to z fab. Welded a stop plate to line up the swing out to the bumper and another plate for the latch to grab onto.

Things I would do different next time:
Use 1/4" angle for the frame plates and incorporate all the frame bolts and use these plates as anchors for recovery points.
Use 3/16" tube for the main tube.
Use 1/8" tube for the swing out.

Let me know if you have any questions. This set up isn't perfect but it is custom and relatively inexpensive.

Dude this looks great! I also built my bumpers on my truck. I like the lines youpicked. I was going to cut my truck up but chickened out as ive never hit the bed sides there needing the "high clearance"

Haha, how's your bumper coming along? You could make a build thread for it too....I probably would've used some of your method had I thought of them and had a little moor time

    Good stuff.

I am amazed at what you can do with a bunch metal and a welder.

One day I will have that skill....
