Short story is I bought my wife a new Rav4 limited for christmas last year. We recently went on vacation and our rental was a subaru crosstrek and she fell in love with it.
We didnt even look st subaru's when we were buying, we just went with what we know and love, Toyota. Several of my buddies own subbies though and I know theyre great vehicles too.
Doubtful we could make any kind of decent trade at this point but I wouldnt mind if it wasnt too bad of a deal.
    What ya think?

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
Speaking form experience, it's not worth taking a huge hit on a trad in. Subaru's are nice, but I would live with the decision and drive the Rav4 for another year at least. Dump as much as you can afford (without going into the Taco budget of course) into the payment during that time and look at it in a year or so. You at least want to break even with the trade.

I feel your pain...we traded my wife's 2 year old CRV in on a Crosstrek. You won't lose your ass to bad trading in the Rav4. It will sell very quickly and they know that. For what it's worth, the Crosstrek is my wife's favorite car that she has ever owned.

I know that feeling. I sold my 2016 Jetta for my 2014 Tacoma, I regret nothing.

Also, the Crosstrek does 0-60 in 10.3 seconds. Just something to consider....

Do Subaru dealers come off retail much or do they mostly stick close to sticker like Toyota?

One of my friends was trading in her jeep liberty for a new impresa fully loaded last year and she managed to get a little off sticker but when it came to her trade in(which was still being financed) she went to another dealership had them give an offer for her jeep and she liked that price so she went back to the subie dealer and showed that and said to match it and she would buy the impresa

The RAV4's direct competitor is the Forester. The Crosstrek is an Impreza on raised suspension, so it is closer in size to the Matrix / Corolla iM. Do you need the RAV4's extra interior room?

Personally I wouldn't get a Crosstrek or 2012+ Impreza because they are pig-slow (engine lost 22 horses compared to the 2008-2011 model), but that is just my own preference giving priority to power over fuel economy.

My wife and I are huge Subaru fans. Over the years we have owned eight. In 2012 I purchased my wife a Subaru Crosstrek and she loved it, until last year when she drove a RAV4. We traded off the Crosstrek for a RAV4, and my wife couldn't be happier. The Crosstrek's ride was rough and the mpg was no where near what they advertised. In my opinion, the RAV4 is a much better vehicle.

    Interesting!

The Crosstrek we rented didn't seem slow, but we drove it like a rental lol.

The Crosstrek is also significantly smaller than the RAV4; it is a sub-compact SUV.

Yeah, a bit less cargo room in the back but overall seemed ok. We arent tall people so no worries about leg room.
I think we're gonna wait a bit. Unless I get a wild hair...

Rav4 is 9.x seconds 0-60 so it's not like you're losing something fast.

My girlfriend recently compared the Rav4 to the Outback (I know, different than the Crosstrek) and she likes the Outback way more.

I liked my forester till it shit the bed at 112k due to a head gasket issue... Also had a lot of small stuff go wrong with the cheap interior. Honestly I won't buy another one.

Check truecar and such for pricing. I plan on going through costco auto program and have in the past. If you dont have costco, you could use usaa, credit union, etc and maybe save a bit too if they have negotiated pricing. Ill be picking up a wrx or sti likely very soon, and will also be calling all the dealerships in a drivable area to see what their best otd price is on my selected options.

Negative. Life is too short, get what she wants to drive. It's just a damn car. Besides, you might get lucky at home..<wink wink>
