I understand this has probably been discussed many times, but I am wanting to know specifically what could possibly be best for my 4 banger.
It's a 2008 4cyl Manual Transmission Access cab 4x4. I am most interested to know if one actually increases the life of the vehicle.

I've got just under 100k miles on it so far, and just wondering if there is a general accepted idea about this.
Also, if you guys suggest any specific oil filters, I would be all ears.

Is this just one of those things where everyone thinks what they use is best? Or is there a legit oil product out there that is best for our 4 bangers, or just vehicles in general?

My last Tacoma was a V6, and I think I switched to synthetic around 200k, but honestly that truck was neglected many oil changes and it always ran great.

I'm a synthetic guy because synthetics work far better in extreme temps but synthetics aren't worth the money unless you run extended drain intervals which I do or live where the temps are extreme like I do. Just run dino and change it at the factory intervals unless you "need" a syn. I run Mobil 1 oil filters but the stockers are just fine. Mobil 1 makes good, solid filters that can go with extended drain intervals. If you want to do extended drain intervals it is a must to do oil analysis like I do through a company like Blackstone Labs so you don't go too far.

The main reason I extend my intervals is because I hate getting under there and changing oil every 5000 miles. I've been going 7500 miles between oil and filter changes but went 8400 this last time. After I send my sample off to Blackstone I'll decide if I want to go 8500 every time. They said the last sample looked so good that I could go 9500 this last time but I didn't. I'm running Amsoil Signature 10-30 and most Amsoil Signature users routinely go 10,000 miles between changes. I run Iridium spark plugs because I don't want to have to change them every 30,000 miles.

Do you use frog lube or seal 1 to clean and lube your guns or CLP?

Frog lube causes guns to malfunction. Clp is mediocre at best, does nothing great, it's a half ass cleaner, half ass lube, that the military gives to grunts so grunts don't fuck up their guns.

Gun oils are a gimmick, gun oils will never have to be held to the standards that motor oils do. So I use motor oil and tractor grease on all of my guns. They are far Superior Products and cost me a fraction as much as gun oils.

Speaking of Mobil 1, right now you can get 5qts of Mobil 1 for $10 after online rebate. Buy from Walmart for $22, submit $12 rebate directly on Mobil 1's website

Buy the Oem filter for about $4.50 and you have yourself a synthetic oil change for about $15

Use whatever oil meets the specification required in your owner's manual, and change it at the required interval. Follow the normal service vs severe service guidelines, as appropriate for your driving habits. Most synthetics and many conventional oils will meet the spec for your 4-cylinder.

About adding life to your engine by using synthetic oil, keep in mind that synthetics don't necessarily lubricate better than conventional. The benefit is that synthetics resist shearing and will typically last longer, but you need to do some used oil analyses to know exactly how much longer you can run the synthetic vs conventional drain intervals. Another benefit of synthetic is they usually keep the engine cleaner, all other things being equal. Also, synthetic oil flows better in very cold conditions. These factors could provide longer engine life with synthetic oil, but you will need to drive 300k miles or more to have an answer, and even then, you still won't know if you could have driven this far using conventional oil and regular service intervals.

I use synthetic because rebates/deals are available where you can get it cheaper than conventional. Better product, lower price, a no-brainer.
