    Right now I keep
    - Two shovels 1 big 1 small
    - tow straps
    - a few simple tools
    - kitty litter
    - water
    - food
    - lights
    - lighters / matches
    - extra cloths
    - basic first aid
    -stock tire changing kit
    - glock 19 with a full mag, and an extra box of shells. ( I take it inside my house at night, and it stays locked up in and out the car)

    I keep all this stuff in a 2×2' box in my back seat, and the big shovel on the floor of the back seat ( to prevent theft). Surprisingly doesn't take up much space, but I can only seat one person in the back seat of the access cab right now.

    Not bragging, I actually feel really underprepared. I got stuck in the wilderness once, and was I'll prepared. Never want that to happen again.

    I recently just got a shell, so I think I can step it up a notch now ( soon as I get the locking tailgate upgrade handle thing ). If anyme has suggestions on a good option to lock my tailgate let me know.
    Right now I'm looking at buying this.

    What should I add?
    I'm a little bit of a prepper so I want to be prepared !

    I live in Utah, snow is crazy in the winter, and summer is hot. The wilderness is very muddy in the spring.

    Posted in the 4 banger forum because I don't want to go crazy on weight.
    I'm getting 21mpg, and want to keep it that way.:yes:

    Contractor grade garbage bags.

    Heavy duty.
    Massive size.

    Can be used for a poncho, makeshift shelter or any number of things.

    Weigh next to nothing when compared to traditional tarps.

    I have a pop-a-lock tailgate thing. No issues thus far.

    Awesome, wouldn't of even considered that, those bags could be used for a ton of things.
    Good to hear on the locker too!

    I have the Pop-Lock you referenced. Simple install and works fine. However, I got the black color and it faded within months.

    Serpentine belt. Not Tacoma specific, but I just got a Garmin inreach Iridium satellite communicator. I solo camp/hike/backpack and most areas don't have cell coverage, it's nice piece of mind.

    Edit: grab some freeze dried food like MountainHouse, I love it when living out of the truck in the back country. Tasty meals and all you need is hot water.

    Defrost mirrors, compass/temp display rear view mirror, rear wiper on camper shell, trans.cooler.
    Clothesline Rope- many uses. Road flares will light when matches or lighter won't.Topographic maps will show terrain and jeep trails if you need to walk out. Compass with mirror. Sleeping bag, long handled knife of some kind, Can opener or multi tool.
    If your truck doesn't have a auto dimming mirror with compass on it. You can get one for less than $5 at most auto recyclers. Easy to "re set" the compass once it's installed. Google it. Some have garage door buttons on them too.

    Channellock brand pliers. Zip ties, crescent wrench. Small metric socket and wrench set, 10 in 1 screwdriver, extra fuses for the truck.I would guess having a bed mat would help in you had to sleep in the bed. Or you could put it on the ground or in a tent to insulate yourself from the ground, Gallon of water, Extra jacket, Toilet paper, a couple bic lighters.

    One of the best ways to figure out what works: get a notebook, get in the truck with what you have now, drive out to the boonies and spend the night... you will realize quickly what you wish you had/didn't have. Take notes and keep improving your 'kit'

    Rubbermaid 'Brute' totes are good too for keeping stuff dry in the bed. Look for the white ones - easier to find stuff in the bottom, don't bake in the sun.

    'Luci' solar LED lights are awesome too (Lowes/Walmart)... cheap, leave a couple on the dash to stay charged up.

    Solar/Crank/WX Band/USB gizmo too - quality matters, buy the best you can.

    Tom Brown's Wilderness Survival Book and North American edible plants are tucked under my seat in a ziploc bag too...
